In Westville, Oklahoma, Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services. Whether for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is backed by nationwide centers ready to assist with your needs. For an effective test, ensure you have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair available. Analyze hair samples for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other customizable options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have gained popularity in drug testing protocols. These tests are increasingly favored by employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals over the traditional urine tests. They serve employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial systems, and individuals on probation. The main advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, securely collected and hard to tamper with. However, for detecting drug use within five days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective instrument for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. Sampling hair near the scalp allows for a detection window of up to roughly three months for both alcohol and drugs. The process of obtaining a hair sample is uncomplicated, not easily tampered with, and straightforward to transport.

A sample consisting of 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional assays, and/or those exceeding 10 panels, a specimen weighing 150mg is preferred. It's advisable to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a corresponding quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair specifically indicate scalp hair, whereas body hair encompasses all other types, including facial and axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary phase where a sample is incorporated into a lab’s system. This phase involves ensuring that the sample is properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While cost-efficient for dismissing drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates affirmation to be legally valid. Samples indicating a presumptive positive must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample indicates a presumptive positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for Preparation. During Extraction, substances are retrieved from hair at a notably lower concentration than alternative methods such as urine or oral fluid, rendering hair drug testing the most demanding technique.

Verification of any positive screening outcomes is carried out using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methodologies. Before confirmation, if required, all samples indicating presumptive positives undergo a thorough wash. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can uncover substance use for up to 90 days, surpassing the shorter duration of urine tests.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, thus enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Retains historical data: It charts drug usage patterns over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are often pricier than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual variability in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites within hair.

Note: While commonly labeled as "hair follicle tests," the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
