Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in White Bead, Oklahoma. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, look no further than Accredited Drug Testing, specialists in hair testing, with centers in cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown of your head or elsewhere on your body can be used for these tests. Hair testing can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored for other purposes.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly embraced hair follicle drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are turning to hair tests over the standard urine alternative. Hair follicle tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance drug policies, judiciary systems, and probation departments. Their primary advantage is a substantially longer detection window, extending up to 90 days, collected through a monitored process and significantly challenging to manipulate. Yet, for detecting drug usage in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has increasingly gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal substance use over a period of approximately three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the diameter of a #2 pencil) adjacent to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest weighing the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent volume of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing for drug test results encompasses four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process ensures the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fills any missing information not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial cursory check for drug use. While Screening is a budget-friendly approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive outcome requires confirmation for legal admissibility. Any samples exhibiting presumptive positive results in Screening mandate a secondary confirmation.

If a sample registers as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is sourced from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug testing as the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of any positive screen is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples with presumptive positive results undergo a washing stage before confirmation as appropriate. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation pursuant to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that possess a shorter detection period.
  • Cheating deterrence: The difficulty of falsifying a hair drug test enhances result reliability.
  • Offers historical insight: The test provides a pattern of drug use over time, rather than merely indicating recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent substance use: A 5-7 day period is necessary for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to incur higher costs compared to alternative drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and personal hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels within hair.

Note: Although frequently termed as "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the hair follicle situated beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
