Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services in Woodlawn Park, Oklahoma. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test utilizing hair samples, we specialize in these tests with numerous centers across the country and can conduct hair analyses efficiently. The preferred hair length is about 1.5 to 2 inches from the scalp, although body hair is acceptable when needed. Our testing covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored hair diagnostics.

In recent times, using a hair follicle test for drug screening has become more common. Employers, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals increasingly prefer hair tests to urine tests. Hair exams are employed by employers with strict no-drug policies, court systems, and probation officers. A key advantage of hair tests is their extended detection period for substances, typically up to 90 days, observed under strict collection protocols, making evasion extremely difficult. For recent drug use, within five days, urinalysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The employment of hair testing has increasingly been recognized as an effective method for detecting drug and alcohol usage. Hair embodies an extended-term record of substance use by encasing biomarkers within the fibers of a growing strand. When hair is collected near the scalp, it may offer nearly a 3-month window for the detection of alcohol and other drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and can be easily transported.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal quantity for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of specimen is suggested. It's advised to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. In situations where scalp hair isn't available, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. The term head hair specifically refers to scalp hair, while the term body hair encompasses all other types of hair (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

There are four principal stages in the laboratory process for processing a drug test result: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial steps of processing a sample into a lab's records. This step checks that the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and accomplishes any other data entry not already provided via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening introduces a rapid examination for potential drug abuse. Though Screening offers a cost-efficient approach to dismiss drug consumption for most samples, a positive result in Screening needs confirmation for legal acceptance. Samples indicated as potentially positive in Screening must undergo a secondary confirmation.

Should a sample appear presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original specimen to undergo Extraction. This phase involves retrieving drugs from hair at significantly reduced concentrations relative to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to hair drug screening being the most challenging methodology to conduct.

The process of validating any positive screening follows through techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, any presumptively positive samples undergo necessary washing. The complete lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing can track drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: Manipulating the results of a hair drug test is highly challenging, thus enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical data: The method can outline a timeline of drug consumption over time, rather than just current use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes about 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug testing tends to come with higher costs than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variations in results: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Although commonly dubbed "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand, not the follicle located beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
