Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Alpine, Oregon. If a hair drug or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing is an expert in hair testing, with centers across the nation where tests can be conducted. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is generally sufficient. These hair tests are designed to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized testing requirements.

In recent times, the preference for drug testing has increasingly shifted towards hair follicle testing. Many employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts now favor hair drug tests over the traditional urine analyses. Hair follicle drug tests are often selected by employers with strict no-drug policies, courts, and probationers due to their advantages. The leading advantage of hair testing is its extended detection window of up to 90 days, coupled with a supervised collection process that's nearly foolproof. However, for drug use detection in the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a significant method for identifying the usage of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a historical record of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, the hair can offer a detection timeframe of up to about three months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches long, comprising approximately 200 strands of hair (equivalent to a #2 pencil), taken closest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for testing and validation. For EtG, additional screens, and/or assessments beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the specimen. If scalp hair is not available, an equal quantity of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other hair types (such as facial and axillary).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial integration of a sample into the lab’s system. This step involves ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any further data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening involves a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient means to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive outcomes in Screening necessitate confirmation to be court-admissible. Any samples that screen positive on a preliminary basis require a secondary verification.

When a sample is flagged as presumptively positive in the Screening stage, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than seen in other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is one of the most challenging methodologies to conduct.

Verification of positive screening results is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples that are preliminarily positive are cleansed before confirmation, if necessary. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning through Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug evaluations can determine drug use for as long as 90 days, in contrast to urine evaluations, which possess a shorter detection range.
  • Difficulty in cheating: It is exceedingly challenging to rig a hair drug test, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Compiles historical data: It reveals a timeline of drug consumption over an extended period, rather than merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in the hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug evaluations are usually pricier than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolites' concentration in the hair.

Note: Though commonly labeled "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually evaluates the hair strand, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Unlike traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing offers a superior detection capability in Alpine, OR. The hair test's accuracy surpasses that of urine tests, providing a comprehensive analysis of substance use. Its extended detection window, lasting up to 90 days, allows employers to make informed decisions based on an applicant's or employee's drug use history.

Traditional urine tests often struggle with short detection periods, typically only identifying drug use within the past few days. Hair follicle tests, however, provide a broader timeline, thereby enhancing reliability and accuracy. This makes them a more robust tool for organizations in Alpine aiming to maintain high standards.

Extended Detection Window

One of the standout benefits of hair follicle testing in Alpine, OR is its extended detection window. Capable of identifying drug use up to 90 days prior, this type of testing offers employers a thorough understanding of an individual's substance use habits, which is invaluable for informed decision-making.

The lengthy detection period of hair tests surpasses that of more conventional options, such as urine tests, which often only provide a brief glimpse into recent drug activity. This comprehensive overview is essential for maintaining workplace safety and compliance with drug policies.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Alpine, OR, hair follicle drug tests stand out for their tamper-resistant nature, substantially lowering the risk of sample adulteration. The intrinsic properties of hair make it difficult to modify or contaminate, ensuring reliable and undeniable results.

Compared to urine tests, which are more susceptible to tampering, hair follicle tests serve as a more secure and trustworthy option. This reliability is crucial in maintaining the integrity of the testing process and upholding drug-free workplace standards.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
