Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services across Annex, Oregon. If a hair drug or alcohol test is required, Accredited Drug Testing is the expert in hair testing, with facilities in cities around the nation capable of conducting a hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is necessary to perform a test, but body hair can also be utilized in most cases. Hair testing can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a more common method for conducting drug tests. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals often prefer hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Hair follicle drug tests are favored by employers with strict drug use policies, courts, and parolees. Their main advantage is an extended drug use detection window of up to 90 days, utilizing an observed collection process that is highly resistant to tampering. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, the urine test remains the most accurate option.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands preserve a long-term record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, hair can reveal usage patterns for up to three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (approximating the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the preferred quantity for testing and verification. For EtG, additional screenings, or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler’s scale for precise measurement is suggested. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be utilized. References to head hair pertain solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core stages in processing a drug test result within a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial registration of a sample into a laboratory's system. This step confirms that the sample was adequately sealed and dispatched, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any additional data logging not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. Although cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for legal admissibility. Samples that show presumptive positivity during Screening require further validation.

For samples with presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and prepped for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in methods like urine or oral fluid, making hair drug testing particularly arduous.

Positive screening confirmations are executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use up to 90 days, surpassing urine tests with shorter windows.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is exceptionally hard, ensuring accurate findings.
  • Delivers longitudinal data: Offers a record of drug use over time, beyond just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: Detectability of drugs in hair takes about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug tests cost more than other testing forms.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination targets the hair strand, not the underlying follicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
