In Athena, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If needing assessments for drugs or alcohol through hair samples, our expertise is notable, backed by a national network of testing centers. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body is required. Hair tests can check for drugs, ETG/alcohol, or customized testing needs.

Recently, drug testing methods increasingly prioritize hair follicle tests. Employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse specialists often prefer them over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests address zero-tolerance policies, court requirements, and probation oversight efficiently, offering a detection window of up to 90 days. While they ensure an observed collection, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as a significant method for detecting drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged record of substance use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection period of up to approximately three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the perfect sample for both screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, additional tests, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler's scale to measure the sample is recommended. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. When discussing head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair refers to other hair types (such as facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process for drug test results consists of four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial sample processing into the lab's system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and shipped, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary examination for substances of abuse. While Screening is a cost-effective means to exclude drug use for most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal acceptance. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening require additional confirmation.

If a sample is positive during Screening, additional hair is taken from the original sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most complex method to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive screening occurs through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Cheating challenges: It's notably hard to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Provides historical insight: It offers a drug use pattern over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Detecting drugs in hair takes around 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing types.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth differences can impact drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Athena, OR, the advantages of hair follicle tests over traditional urine tests are significant. Hair tests offer greater accuracy, making them superior tools for substance detection. While urine tests detect recent use, hair testing catches a broader range of substances over longer periods, resulting in a more comprehensive assessment.

Hair follicle tests deliver reliable results that urine tests can't match for prolonged detection periods. In cases requiring more stringent screening protocols, companies in Athena, OR, are increasingly turning to hair testing for its undeniable advantages over urine testing.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
