Procedure Overview

The four primary stages in laboratory processing for drug test outcomes include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning handles the initial integration of the sample into a lab's system, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) at random, and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Confirmatory analysis of any positive results from Screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if needed. The entire laboratory process, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation, including accreditation per ISO/IEC 17025 standards.
