In Cayuse, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and have facilities across the Nation, prepared to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are needed. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing options.

The prevalence of hair follicle drug tests has been increasing in recent years. Employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists are opting for hair tests over traditional urine screening. Employers with strict no-drug policies utilize hair tests, as do courts and probation service users. The main advantage is a longer substance detection window, up to 90 days, observed collection, and is nearly impossible to falsify. Yet, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol use. Hair provides an extended timeline of substance use by capturing biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When extracted near the scalp, hair can offer up to a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to a #2 pencil) taken near the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests over 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for accuracy. If scalp hair isn’t available, a similar volume of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary stages in laboratory processing for drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This means ensuring the sample's seal and shipment were intact, creating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening is a preliminary evaluation for substance use. While Screening economically dismisses drug use in most samples, a positive result must be verified for legal acceptability. Any samples with a potential positive result in Screening require additional confirmation.

If Screening suggests a positive result, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other techniques (e.g., urine or saliva), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Positive results from Screening are confirmed through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. Presumptive positive samples are washed before confirmation if necessary. The comprehensive process from Accessioning through Confirmation is validated under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and ISO / IEC 17025 standard certifications.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter detection range.
  • Challenge to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is quite difficult, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Yields chronological data: Drug use patterns can be discerned over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Lack of recent use detection: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though often termed "hair follicle tests," these tests examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Cayuse, OR, offers distinct advantages over traditional urine tests. One key benefit is its extended detection window, which can reveal substance use for up to 90 days, providing a broader overview. This extended period allows employers and others to have a comprehensive understanding of an individual's drug use history, thereby enhancing informed decision-making.

Compared to urine testing, hair testing presents a higher level of accuracy and reliability. It minimizes the potential for data manipulation and the issue of samples being tampered with, which remains a concern with urine tests. The non-invasive nature of hair testing, coupled with its robustness, makes it a preferable choice for many requiring dependable drug screening solutions.

Extended Detection Window

For employers in Cayuse, OR, hair follicle drug testing offers a valuable extended detection window. Unlike other methods, this test can identify drug use over a duration of up to 90 days, providing a comprehensive overview of an individual's substance history. This wider detection range helps companies make informed decisions by understanding long-term drug habits.

The extensive detection capacity of hair tests is particularly advantageous for those looking to implement rigorous safety and compliance measures. It ensures that any history of substance use, even from months ago, can be adequately captured and reviewed, giving employers added confidence in maintaining a drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

The robust nature of hair follicle testing in Cayuse, OR, greatly reduces the possibility of sample tampering. This form of testing provides a more secure and reliable method of assessing drug use, as altering a hair sample is nearly impossible. Thus, the results obtained are trustworthy and an accurate reflection of an individual's drug use history.

The risk of adulteration is significantly lowered with hair follicle testing. In contrast to urine tests, hair samples are not easily compromised, affording organizations and individuals peace of mind about the validity of the results. This testing method acts as a deterrent, discouraging attempts at manipulation and ensuring fairness and accuracy.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
