Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug testing solutions in Cedar Mill, Oregon. Whether you need a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unparalleled, with testing centers across the Nation ready to perform the procedure. You must have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair at the crown or other body parts for sampling. Hair tests can target drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored testing options.

In recent times, drug testing methods more frequently employ hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. Its key advantage is a longer detection window for drugs- up to 90 days, with observed collection processes, making it difficult to cheat. Still, for drug use in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the go-to accuracy standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective method for uncovering substance and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers within its strands. When collection is done near the scalp, it can reveal a detection span of roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to collect, hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A hair sample measuring 1.5 inches with around 200 strands (similar to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp yields 100mg of hair, ideal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional tests, or panels surpassing 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample is suggested. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair is suitable. 'Head hair' specifies scalp hair exclusively, while 'body hair' covers all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing a drug test result encompasses four primary tasks: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is about the initial handling of a sample upon entry to a lab system. This step ensures proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes additional data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drugs of abuse. While cost-efficient for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for legal acceptance. Presumptive positives from Screening necessitate secondary verification.

Should Screening indicate a presumptive positive, additional hair is retrieved from the original sample for Extraction. During Extraction, drugs are isolated from hair at a considerably lower concentration than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), thus making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology.

Confirmation of a positive screen uses GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing before Confirmation, as necessary. The entire lab progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection period: Hair tests perceive drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Challenging to falsify: Hair drug tests are hard to cheat, offering greater result accuracy.
  • Records historical usage: It illustrates a trend of drug activity over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent consumption: Drugs generally become noticeable in hair after 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence the concentration of drug residues in hair.

Note: Despite the term "hair follicle tests," the analysis targets the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
