In Chehalem Mountain, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers complete hair follicle tests for drugs and alcohol. If a hair or alcohol test is necessary, our expertise in hair testing spans Nationwide, ensuring accessibility in all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from either the crown or body is required. These tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG or be tailored for specific hair testing needs.

The trend in drug testing has increasingly favored hair follicle analysis over the years. More employers, legal entities, and addiction specialists now prefer hair testing rather than the usual urine method. Hair tests are preferred for organizations implementing zero-tolerance policies, by courts, and for probation cases. Their advantage lies in their longer detection period, accurate when observing drug use up to 90 days, and difficult to tamper with, yet urine tests remain precise for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

The perception of hair testing has evolved into viewing it as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol usage. Hair acts as a timeline for alcohol and substance intake, capturing biomarkers within the hair strand's growing fibers. When clipped near the scalp, it can reveal a close to 3-month usage history for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to compromise, and simple for transportation.

A sample of 1.5 inches of roughly 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp provides 100mg, which is ideal for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or those exceeding 10-panel screens, 150mg of the hair sample is advisable. It is suggested to weigh the specimen using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a similar quantity of body hair can be gathered. "Head hair" specifically indicates scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other types (such as facial or underarm).

Process Overview

Key stages in lab processing of drug test results include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial entry into the lab's system. It involves confirming proper sealing and dispatch, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing outstanding data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers a preliminary assessment for drug consumption. Despite its cost efficiency, a positive screening must be validated for legal acceptance. Any indicative positives from Screening necessitate an additional confirmation step.

In cases of indicative positivity during Screening, additional hair is drawn from the original sample for Extraction. Here, drugs are procured from hair at significantly reduced concentrations compared to other methods (such as urine or saliva), underscoring hair drug screening's complexity.

Validation of any positive screening outcome employs GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Samples suspected positive undergo washing before validation if necessary. The full lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair mandate and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation criteria.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analysis can track substance use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests reflect a shorter span.
  • Hard to manipulate: The integrity of hair drug testing is robust, yielding dependable results.
  • Chronicles usage patterns: Offers insights into consumption trends over time, surpassing mere immediate usage.

Constraints:

  • Cannot track immediate use: Drugs become hair-detectable after roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Generally, hair drug analyses costlier than alternative methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth rates influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis targets the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
