Providing comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Crescent, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to solution. Whether in need of a hair or alcohol test, our specialization in hair analysis ensures quality service. Nationwide centers, including locations in all major cities, are ready to conduct your test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your scalp or body is required, suitable for drug or alcohol/ETG assessments along with tailored testing protocols.

The preference for hair follicle drug testing has risen in recent years as opposed to traditional methods. Employers enforcing stringent anti-drug policies, legal courts, and addiction specialists favor this test over urine analysis. The standout feature of hair testing is its extensive detection timeline, reaching up to 90 days, composed with an observable collection, making it nearly tamper-proof. Nonetheless, detecting recent use within the past five days still favors urine testing for its precision.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a potent instrument for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the growing hair strands. By collecting hair near the scalp, it can offer a detection span of up to about 3 months for alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to alteration, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch portion containing approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent amount of body hair may be collected. In reference to head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair indicates all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing of a sample into a laboratory's system. This involves ensuring the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening entails a preliminary swift assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient method for negating drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be validated to be considered in legal settings. Samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation.

If a sample is presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), which accounts for the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive Screening outcomes is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests can detect drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection window.
  • Difficulty to cheat: It is exceedingly challenging to cheat a hair drug test, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Provides historical data: It offers a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other drug testing methods.
  • Variations in results: Aspects such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand and not the hair follicle below the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
