In Crooked River, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is matched by our accessible testing centers available in cities nationwide. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your crown or body. Our hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized to other testing needs.

Lately, conducting drug tests through hair follicle testing has become more prevalent. Many workplaces, legal systems, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests instead of traditional urine tests. Hair follicle tests benefit employers with a zero-tolerance policy, judicial entities, and probation services due to their longer detection period—up to 90 days—and nearly impossible cheating potential. However, for drug use identification in the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has become recognized as a compelling mechanism for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a protracted timeline of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers in the structure of the hair as it grows. When sourced nearest to the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 90-day detection range for alcohol and drugs. Hair is straightforward to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch portion of around 200 hair strands (about the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will provide 100mg of hair, which is the preferred amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional components, and/or testing beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the hair is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen. If scalp hair is not present, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. When mentioning head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair refers to all other categories of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Procedure Outline

The primary stages in the lab handling of a drug test sample include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning signifies the initial handling of a sample into a lab's system. This process ensures that the sample was appropriately sealed and transported, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves an initial assessment for substance misuse. Although Screening is an economical method to exclude drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for it to be legally valid. Any samples that show a presumptive positive in Screening are required to undergo secondary confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial specimen for Preparation. In this step, drugs are extracted from hair at a considerably lower concentration than in other methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most intricate methodology to execute.

Verification of any positive screen result is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation according to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a narrower detection range.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is notably hard to manipulate a hair drug test, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insights: It can furnish a timeline of drug usage over time, not merely recent use.

Challenges:

  • Cannot identify recent use: Roughly 5-7 days are required for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual hair growth variances can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite commonly being called "hair follicle tests", the assessment evaluates the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
