Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Culver, Oregon. Whether in need of a hair drug or alcohol analysis, this organization excels in hair testing, with facilities available nationwide. The test typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body. These tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, along with other personalized hair analysis options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a popular method of drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts often prefer a hair drug test over a basic urine test. Companies with zero-tolerance policies, judicial systems, and probationers utilize hair follicle tests. The primary advantage of this test is its extended drug detection window, lasting up to 90 days, with the collection process supervised, making it almost impossible to tamper with. However, for drug usage within the past five days, a urine test remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair strands encapsulate biomarkers within their structure, offering an extended timeline of alcohol and other substances use. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal alcohol and drug presence for a duration of roughly three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

Obtaining a sample of 1.5 inches comprised of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) from the area nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a specimen of 150mg is advisable. We advocate for verifying the specimen's weight using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair cannot be procured, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. "Head hair" references only scalp hair, whereas "body hair" encompasses all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary steps involved in the lab analysis of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In Accessioning, the initial task is to process the sample into the lab’s database by ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and fulfilling any extra data requirements not provided electronically.

Screening serves as an initial assessment for detecting drugs of misuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method for eliminating drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result needs confirmation for legal validity. Any suspected positive samples in Screening must undergo further validation.

When a Screening result is tentatively positive, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and readied for Extraction. In this step, drugs are isolated from hair at markedly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening exceptionally challenging to conduct.

Validation of any positive Screening results is achieved via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All suspected positive samples are cleansed before Confirmation if necessary. The full lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation in addition to the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection timeline: Hair tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, compared to urine tests which provide a shorter detection duration.
  • Difficult to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It can demonstrate a pattern of drug consumption over time, rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: Detection of drugs in hair takes approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be costlier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual distinctions in hair growth can modify drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Though frequently called "hair follicle tests", the evaluation pertains to the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
