In Dee, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers thorough hair follicle drug testing. If you're looking for a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing is a specialist in hair testing, with centers across the nation capable of conducting a hair analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair suffices for testing purposes. Analysis options include drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized tests.

Recently, the hair follicle drug test method has become more prevalent in drug testing. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. These tests are favored by employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs. The hair test's primary advantage is its longer drug detection window, up to 90 days, with observation during collection, making deception nearly impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain most accurate.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has become recognized as an effective means for identifying the usage of alcohol and drugs. Hair records an extended history of substance use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing strand. When collected near the scalp, it can offer approximately a three-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and can be transported with ease.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of around 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a collection of 150mg of the specimen is advised. It is advisable to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be taken. When mentioning head hair, this refers to scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result comprises four major steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. It encompasses confirming that the sample was sealed and transported correctly, assigning an arbitrary LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not available through an electronic chain of custody.

Screening encompasses an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. While screening is an economical option for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in legal contexts. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

If a sample is initially positive at the Screening phase, additional hair is taken from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at a much lower concentration than found in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most challenging methodologies.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Any samples that are initially positive are cleansed before confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation for ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Difficulty in deception: It is highly challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more accurate results.
  • Provides historical insights: It reveals a pattern of drug use over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect immediate use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become traceable in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can affect drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Though often termed as "hair follicle tests", the test actually examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Dee, OR, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine testing due to its superior detection and reliability. Hair tests offer a broader detection window, giving employers and professionals a more comprehensive history of substance use. Unlike urine tests, which are only effective for recent use, hair tests detect usage over several months, making them ideal for ongoing substance assessment.

The enhanced accuracy of hair testing significantly reduces false negatives, ensuring decisions based on these results are well-informed. This certainty makes hair follicle testing advantageous for zero-tolerance environments, reinforcing workplace policies.

  • Extended detection period
  • Enhanced reliability

Extended Detection Window

In Dee, OR, hair follicle testing effectively identifies drug use over longer durations. This testing method can detect substances consumed up to 90 days prior, providing an overview of a person's drug habits that is unattainable through shorter detection methods like urine tests.Hair tests allow employers to glean more extensive substance use insights regarding their staff or potential hires.
They allow a more informed judgment on an applicant's or worker's suitability for employment.

Employers gain a comprehensive understanding of an individual's substance history through hair follicle testing, enabling better hiring and monitoring decisions. This extended detection capability aids in fostering a drug-free workplace environment.

  • 90-day detection
  • Comprehensive substance assessment

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

In Dee, OR, hair follicle tests offer a significantly tamper-proof approach to drug testing. This method minimizes the potential for sample alteration, which is a common concern with other testing methods, such as urine tests. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
