Accredited Drug Testing offers a full suite of hair follicle drug testing services in Deschutes River Woods, OR. Specializing in hair assessments, we provide both hair drug and alcohol tests across Nationwide centers, including in all cities. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored testing solutions.

Over recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more common for drug testing purposes. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse specialists now opt for hair drug tests over urine tests. They are favored by employers with strict drug policies, the judiciary, and probation officers. The benefits include a longer drug detection duration of up to 90 days, an observed sample collection, and reduced cheating risk, although urine tests remain most effective for usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair acts as a historical record of alcohol and drug intake by embedding biomarkers in the strands of hair during its growth. When sampled near the scalp, hair can reveal evidence of alcohol and drugs for up to about three months. The collection process is straightforward, alteration is challenging, and shipping is convenient.

A segment of hair measuring 1.5 inches and weighing around 100mg (equivalent to roughly 200 strands of hair or the diameter of a #2 pencil) is considered optimal for testing and verification. For tests like EtG, add-ons, and panels exceeding 10 drugs, 150mg of hair is advisable. It's advisable to measure the sample’s weight using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair is a suitable alternative. "Head hair" pertains strictly to scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to all other types like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test in the lab encompasses four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes bringing the sample into the lab’s workflow. This process verifies the sample was properly sealed and shipped, assigns it a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any necessary data input not captured by an electronic tracking system.

Screening offers an initial inexpensive assessment for drug presence. Though efficient for ruling out drug presence in most samples, a confirmed test is essential for valid court admissibility. Samples with a preliminary positive outcome in Screening require follow-up confirmation.

Should a sample show a tentative positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for detailed Extraction. In this phase, the concentration of drugs extracted from hair is minimal compared to other methods (e.g., urine or saliva), making hair drug testing particularly complex.

Verifying any positive Screening results is performed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. Necessary washing of presumptive positive samples precedes Confirmation. The complete workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation adheres to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and ISO / IEC 17025 certification.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can track drug usage over 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection timeframes.
  • Minimal chance of deception: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, ensuring result reliability.
  • Chronological usage insight: Hair tests reveal a timeline of drug use spanning several months, not just recent intake.

Limitations:

  • Does not detect recent intake: Drugs only become traceable in hair approximately 5 to 7 days post-consumption.
  • Expense: Compared to alternative testing approaches, hair drug tests tend to incur higher costs.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements such as hair pigmentation and individual hair growth rates can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often termed as "hair follicle tests," these evaluations focus on analyzing the hair strand rather than the hair follicle beneath the skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
