Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Dillard, Oregon. For those in need of a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with centers nationwide, ready to conduct these tests. Ideal candidates usually have 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on their head or body. Hair screenings can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized for other specific testing needs.

In recent years, hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug assessments. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts now opt for hair drug testing over the traditional urine analysis. This includes strict no-drug-use policy workplaces and legal probation requirements. The primary advantage of hair testing is its extended detection ability, spanning up to 90 days, which is collected under supervision and is highly resistant to adulteration. Although, for detecting recent drug usage within the last five days, the urine test remains more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of substances by capturing indicators within the fibers of the growing strands. When obtained near the scalp, hair can present a detection period of up to roughly 3 months for these substances. Gathering hair is straightforward, fairly tamper-resistant, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the diameter of a #2 pencil) nearest the scalp should yield 100mg of hair, an optimal amount for both screening and subsequent verification. For EtG, additional analyses, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is advised. It's best to use a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t accessible, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. By head hair, we mean scalp hair alone. Body hair indicates any other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The core steps in laboratory drug testing are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial integration of a sample into the lab's system. This phase ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data input absent in an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it’s a cost-effective way to rule out drug usage in the majority, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Tests indicating a potential positive result during Screening need retesting for validation.

Should a sample show a probable positive result in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug analysis is among the most intricate techniques to apply.

Substantiation of any positive screen result is carried out via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleansed prior to confirmation if necessary. Each phase from Accessioning through Confirmation undergoes a review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Hair drug exams can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine exams with shorter detection spans.
  • Cheating resistance: Hair drug tests are notably hard to deceive, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Provides historical trends: It can display drug usage trends over time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Lacks recent use detection: Drugs require roughly 5-7 days to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug examinations usually cost more than other testing approaches.
  • Variability in results: Factors like hair color and personal growth rates can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly termed "hair follicle tests," the procedure evaluates the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
