Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Elkton, Oregon. Should you need a hair or alcohol screening, our expertise lies in hair analyses, with centers nationwide capable of administering hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp hair or body hair may suffice. Hair testing can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized analyses.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for substance screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for this method over standard urine tests. Hair follicle testing suits employers maintaining strict no-drug-use policies, courts, and probation programs, offering benefits like extended detection periods—up to 90 days, an observed collection procedure, and near-immunity to tampering. Nonetheless, urine tests surpass in detecting usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is recognized as an effective means for identifying the consumption of drugs and alcohol. Hair retains a comprehensive history of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the growing strand's fibers. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing around 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, which is the optimal sample size for testing and validation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or analyses beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We propose using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When addressing head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory handling of a drug test result comprises four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the preliminary integration of a sample into a laboratory's process. This step involves confirming that the sample was adequately sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional information absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Screening offers a cost-effective method to exclude drug usage in most samples, but a positive screened result must undergo confirmation to be court-admissible. Samples that are tentatively positive during Screening necessitate an additional confirmation.

If a sample appears presumptively positive at the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are isolated from hair at a substantially lower concentration compared to other practices (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug testing is the most challenging procedure to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcomes is executed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples testing presumptive positive undergo necessary washing before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical insight: It offers a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs require approximately 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual growth rates can influence metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis is on the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
