Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing in Estacada, Oregon. If a hair drug or alcohol test is what you need, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this, with centers nationwide ready to conduct hair tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair analysis can be customized for drugs, alcohol/ETG or other options.

Recently, employing hair follicle tests for drug screening has surged. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse specialists now prefer this over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, legal systems, and probation programs increasingly rely on this method. Its chief advantage is a longer detection window—up to 90 days—conducted under supervision, making cheating almost impossible. Yet, when determining recent usage within five days, urine testing remains the most reliable.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying substance and alcohol consumption. Hair strands capture biomarkers within their fibers as they grow, providing a historical profile of substances. When sampled near the scalp, hair can offer a detection time frame of up to 90 days for alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, tamper-resistant, and easy for shipment.

A sample size of 1.5 inches comprising roughly 200 hair strands (similar to the diameter of a #2 pencil) from the scalp yields about 100mg, which is optimal for testing and verification. For EtG, additional analyses, or beyond 10 panels, 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler's scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not accessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be used. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair. "Body hair" includes all other hair types (for instance, facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four critical phases in processing a drug test in a lab: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample enters the lab's system. This step involves checking the sample's proper sealing and shipment, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data entries not covered by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening consists of an initial assessment for illicit drugs. While Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use on most samples, a positive result must be validated to hold up in legal contexts. Any presumptively positive Screening samples need further confirmation.

Should a sample test presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the sample for the Extraction phase. In this step, substances are removed from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with other techniques (such as urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening a challenging process.

Any positive Screening outcomes undergo Confirmation through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are washed if needed before confirmation. The entire lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection duration: Can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter window in urine tests.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Hair drug tests are difficult to tamper with, ensuring more reliable results.
  • Sheds light on usage patterns: Can reveal a timeline of substance use, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent intake: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be pricier than other testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and personal hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly known as "hair follicle tests", the analysis actually assesses the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
