In Gilchrist, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing provides complete hair follicle drug testing services. Catering to anyone in need of a hair drug or alcohol test, we specialize in hair testing and boast testing centers in every city across the nation capable of conducting these tests. Generally, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head crown, or body hair can be used. The tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other personalized hair testing options.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a standard in recent years for drug screening. Many employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Employers with stringent no-drug policies, courts, and probationers are among those who utilize hair follicle testing. Its main advantage is a prolonged detection window, typically up to 90 days. Moreover, it is conducted under observation, making it almost impossible to manipulate, though for detecting recent drug use within the last five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The hair captures long-term evidence of substances by encasing biomarkers within the fibers as it grows. When acquired near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of about 3 months for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar in dimension to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a specimen of 150mg is advised. We suggest measuring the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be used. In referring to head hair, we specify scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory process of evaluating a drug test result comprises four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s framework. This process verifies proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performs any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary rapid examination for illicit substances. While Screening is a cost-effective method to rule out drug usage in most samples, any positive result requires confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples that test tentatively positive during Screening necessitate a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample test tentatively positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. At this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at substantially lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), highlighting why hair drug testing is among the most complex methodologies.

Positive screening results are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a wash before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory journey from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extensive detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection spans.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Tracks historical usage: It outlines a trend of substance use over time, as opposed to merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair after about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Variable outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can influence the metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
