Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle analysis for drug detection in Granite, Oregon. For those requiring hair-based drug or alcohol screenings, we excel in this testing method with facilities in all cities nationwide. Hair from the scalp or body, measuring 1.5 to 2 inches, is required. This method can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or accommodate other specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug testing has become increasingly prevalent as a method for substance detection. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals are opting for hair tests over traditional urine screenings. This testing method benefits employers with zero-tolerance policies, court mandates, and probation requirements. Its extended detection duration of up to 90 days and observed collection process make it nearly impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain more effective for recent drug use detection within a five-day window.

What it is, How it works

Hair examinations have garnered recognition as an impactful method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged narrative of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of the growing hair. When taken near the scalp, hair may offer a detection timeframe of up to 90 days for alcohol and other substances. Hair is easy to collect, relatively tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 strands of hair (comparable to the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn’t available, a corresponding amount of body hair may be used. When discussing head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair pertains to all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in the laboratory processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This process includes confirming that the sample was properly sealed and transported, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data entry not furnished by an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening encompasses a preliminary swift test for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical method to eliminate drug use in the majority of samples, a positive screening must be verified for court admissibility. Samples that are presumptively positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, extra hair is extracted from the original sample and arranged for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are drawn out from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), hence why hair drug testing is the most complex procedure to execute.

Validation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a cleaning process before confirmation, as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is assessed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection timeframe: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is exceedingly difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring more accurate results.
  • Delivers historical insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug consumption over an extended period, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It requires approximately 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically more costly than other drug testing approaches.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Caution: Despite commonly being known as "hair follicle tests", the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle located under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
