Accredited Drug Testing offers extensive hair follicle drug testing services in Harper, Oregon. Whether you need a drug or alcohol hair analysis, we are experts in this field with testing locations available in every city across the nation. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from your head or body. Our hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing needs.

Recently, the practice of using hair follicle drug tests for screening has increased. A growing number of employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over the usual urine test. These tests are favored by those with strict drug-free policies like employers and judicial systems. The advantage of hair tests is their extended detection window of up to 90 days, with samples collected under supervision, making tampering extremely difficult. However, for recent drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments have emerged as a significant method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged history of alcohol and drugs by sequestering biomarkers within the strands of the hair as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair can offer up to a 3-month detection timeline for alcohol and drugs. Collecting is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair segment of roughly 200 strands (comparable to a #2 pencil's width) nearest to the scalp supplies 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for screening and confirming results. For EtG, additional tests, or assessments exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. The sample should be weighed using a jeweler’s scale. If head hair cannot be used, the same quantity of body hair may be obtained. Head hair refers solely to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

Four primary stages are integral to laboratory processing for drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary processing phase of integrating a specimen into a lab’s system, including confirming the proper sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN), and completing any supplementary data entry missing from an electronic chain of custody.

Screening offers an initial cursory evaluation for substances commonly abused. Although it is a cost-efficient technique to eliminate drug use in most samples, a confirmed positive screening result is crucial for legal acceptance. Samples deemed presumptive positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

For samples deemed presumptive positive at the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are isolated from hair at a much reduced concentration than in alternative methodologies (such as urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as the most challenging method to administer.

Confirming positive screening results is achieved using techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo a washing process before confirmation if needed. The entirety of the laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adheres to ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug testing can reveal drug use up to a 90-day span, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter window.
  • Hard to alter results: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely challenging, making the outcomes more reliable.
  • Offers historical insight: This method can trace drug use patterns over time, as opposed to only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect immediate use: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to become detectable in hair.
  • Cost factor: Generally, hair drug testing incurs higher expenses than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Aspects like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence the levels of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests," the analysis involves the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
