For comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Idleyld Park, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to provider. Specializing in hair analysis, our centers nationwide are equipped to administer tests for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and more. Ensure you have at least 1.5 to 2 inches of hair for reliable specimens, which can be sourced from the head or body.

Hair follicle testing has become increasingly incorporated in drug screening protocols. Preferred by employers, courts, and substance abuse experts, these tests offer a distinct advantage over urine tests with an extensive detection period up to 90 days. Conducted under observation, they are difficult to tamper with but remain less effective than urine tests for recent (within 5 days) drug use.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly regarded as an efficient means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a comprehensive record of alcohol and drug use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand. When collected near the scalp, hair offers approximately a 3-month detection window for alcohol and drug use. Hair collection is straightforward, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch section comprising roughly 200 hair strands (equivalent to the thickness of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the preferred quantity for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG, add-ons, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest utilizing a jeweler’s scale for weighing the specimen. In the absence of scalp hair, an equivalent amount of body hair can be gathered. When we mention head hair, it exclusively pertains to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The fundamental steps involved in processing a drug test result in a laboratory include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning focuses on the initial integration of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This comprises validation of proper seal and shipment of the sample, allocating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and entering any additional data absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening signifies an initial rapid examination for drugs of abuse. Though Screening is cost-efficient for negating drug usage in most samples, confirmation is required to render a positive screen admissible in legal settings. Samples exhibiting presumptive positivity in Screening must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample shows presumptive positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening one of the most intricate methodologies to execute.

Confirmation of a positive screen result is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positivity are washed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standard and accreditation per ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, as opposed to urine tests, which have a shorter detection period.
  • Resistant to tampering: Cheating a hair drug test is quite challenging, enhancing the accuracy of results.
  • Provides usage history: It can reveal a pattern of drug use over time, not only recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Elements such as hair color and individual variations in hair growth can affect drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although often termed "hair follicle tests", the examination is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
