Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions in Independence, Oregon. For individuals needing hair drug or alcohol screenings, Accredited Drug Testing excels in the field with facilities available nationwide, equipped for hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body can be utilized for the analysis of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly used for drug testing. Employers, courts, and professionals in substance abuse fields are opting for hair drug tests over standard urine tests because they provide a longer detection period, up to 90 days, and require observed collection, making it difficult to tamper with the results. However, for detecting recent drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the preferred choice due to their accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair assays are increasingly viewed as an effective means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair records a detailed history of alcohol and drug intake by capturing biomarkers in its growing fibers. When taken near the scalp, hair can reflect substance use over a period of up to around three months. Hair is easy to gather, challenging to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Cutting a 1.5-inch length of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the optimal quantity for screening and verification. For EtG, additional checks, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. “Head hair” specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas “body hair” includes all other variations (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory steps in processing drug test results comprise Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial processing within a lab system. This entails confirming the sample was sealed and delivered correctly, assigning a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and inputting any missing data not covered by an electronic chain of custody mechanism.

Screening refers to a preliminary rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is an affordable method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result requires confirmation to be legally credible. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening necessitate an additional verification.

Should Screening return a presumptive positive, additional hair from the sample is taken for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are isolated from hair at much lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug screening the most challenging technique to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS are employed in confirming any positive screen results. Presumptive positives undergo a washing prior to confirmation as needed. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug assessments can trace drug use for up to 90 days, unlike the shorter timeframes of urine tests.
  • Hard to manipulate: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test enhances result accuracy.
  • Indexes past usage: It furnishes a timeline of drug consumption, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug assessments typically cost more compared to other testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair pigment and personal differences in hair growth affect drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: The term "hair follicle tests" is a misnomer since the analysis is done on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
