Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Keno, Oregon. Whether you require a hair drug or alcohol analysis, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities located nationwide capable of performing these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body are necessary. Hair tests are versatile, enabling assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or bespoke testing options.

In recent years, hair follicle testing has become increasingly prevalent in drug screening protocols. Many employers, legal entities, and substance abuse experts now prefer hair tests over traditional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is widely adopted by employers, judicial systems, and individuals on probation due to its zero-tolerance policy enforcement effectiveness. A key advantage of hair testing includes its extended detection window, generally spanning up to 90 days, with samples obtained through a monitored collection process that is nearly tamper-proof. However, for assessing drug use within a recent 5-day period, urine testing remains the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers inside the fibers of the growing strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can reveal drug and alcohol presence for up to around three months. It is easy to collect, hard to alter, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section of approximately 200 hair strands (nearly the thickness of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp secures 100mg of hair, which is optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. Measuring the sample on a jeweler's scale is suggested. If scalp hair can't be obtained, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. References to head hair apply solely to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Summary

The laboratory procedures to process a drug test include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the first step of integrating a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample's seal and shipment are intact, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizes any extra data entry missing from the electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial, rapid assessment for drug abuse presence. While cost-effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening must be confirmed to be valid for legal proceedings. Any samples with a presumptive positive in Screening require a secondary confirmation step.

If a sample suggests positivity during the Screening stage, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and set for Extraction. At this point, drugs are derived from hair at a substantially lower concentration than other methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluids), making hair drug screening the most challenging technique to conduct.

Confirmation of any positive results from screening is conducted using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples indicated as presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation follows both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair criteria and complies with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can track drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests, which have a shorter span.
  • Challenging to falsify: The likelihood of cheating a hair drug test is minimal, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historic drug use patterns: It illustrates a timeline of substance use over several months rather than just recent incidents.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of showing recent use: Approximately 5-7 days are necessary for drugs to be detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Generally termed "hair follicle tests," they examine the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
