Offering full-spectrum hair follicle drug assessments, Accredited Drug Testing operates in Kings Valley, Oregon. Should there be a requirement for a hair drug or alcohol assessment, our proficiency in hair examinations is complemented by a network of centers across the nation prepared to conduct these tests. A sample typically requires 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the scalp or body, to test for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing profiles.

Hair follicle drug testing has increasingly become a common method for drug assessments. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts frequently opt for hair tests over traditional urine tests. Such tests are integral for workplaces with stringent drug policies, legal settings, and probation conditions. The primary advantage of a hair follicle test is its extended detection up to 90 days, collected under supervision, making tampering exceedingly difficult. Nonetheless, for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

The use of hair testing has gained recognition as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. The composition of hair allows it to retain biomarkers from drugs and alcohol over time, capturing these within the strands as they grow. By obtaining samples near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to around three months for alcohol and various drugs. Collecting hair is straightforward, less prone to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A section of hair that is 1.5 inches in length, consisting of approximately 200 strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil), sourced nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg, which is an optimal amount for testing and confirmation. In cases of EtG testing, additional tests, or assessments beyond 10 panels, a specimen amount of 150mg is advisable. It's best to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be inaccessible, an equivalent volume of body hair serves as a substitute. The term head hair specifically pertains to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

There are four primary phases in the laboratory processing of drug test results: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

In the Accessioning phase, the sample undergoes initial processing into the laboratory’s records. This step involves checking if the sample remained sealed and was sent correctly, assigning a Laboratory Accessioning Number (LAN) randomly, and fulfilling any additional data input omitted by an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening serves as the preliminary assessment for drug presence. Though cost-effective for eliminating the presence of drugs in most samples, positive preliminary results must be substantiated for court acceptability. Samples with presumptive positive results during Screening require further confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. Here, drug substances are drawn out of the hair at notably lower concentrations than other methods (like urine or oral samples), establishing hair drug testing as a more complex methodology.

For Confirmation of any positive screening results, techniques like GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS are employed. Before Confirmation, all samples with preliminary positive results undergo washing as necessary. The entire laboratory workflow, from Accessioning through Confirmation, is assessed under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 requirements.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug testing detects drug use for as long as 90 days, whereas urine tests offer a shorter detection period.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The challenge in tampering with hair drug tests results in more precise findings.
  • Provides historical data: It can map drug consumption over time, rather than only recent instances.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It typically takes drugs 5-7 days to become discernible in hair.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests tend to incur greater costs compared to other drug testing forms.
  • Variations in results: Elements such as hair hue and personal hair growth patterns can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Despite often being called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Kings Valley, OR, hair follicle testing surpasses traditional urine tests by offering enhanced detection accuracy and reliability. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
