Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Klamath Agency, Oregon. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this area, with testing centers across all cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Typically requiring 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body, these tests can screen for various drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide customized analytical options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly favored hair follicle analysis. Employers, legal authorities, and Substance Abuse experts often opt for hair drug tests over standard urine tests. These are employed by zero-tolerance employers, judicial systems, and probationary overseers. The key advantage is a prolonged detection window of drug use up to 90 days, with observed collection processes minimizing cheating. Yet, urine tests remain the most precise for detecting use within the past 5 days.

What it is, How it works

An innovative avenue for detecting substance consumption, hair testing captures a comprehensive history of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands of growing hair. When obtained from near the scalp, hair testing can indicate alcohol and drug use over around three months. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, resistant to tampering, and easily transported.

A sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (similar in thickness to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp provides 100mg—optimal for screening and confirmation. For EtG, add-ons, and/or examinations above 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair isn't accessible, equivalent body hair can be utilized instead. When we mention head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other types (such as facial or axillary).

Process Overview

The processing of a drug test result in a laboratory involves four principal steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary incorporation of a sample into a lab's system. This phase ensures the sample is sealed and dispatched correctly and involves assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number) along with completing any extra data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening provides an initial drug abuse check. While it is an economically sensible approach to dismiss drug usage for most samples, any positive screening result must be confirmed to hold validity in legal contexts. Samples that test presumptively positive during Screening need subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample appear positive during Screening, additional hair from the original sample is readied for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted at concentrations much lower than those used in other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), showcasing why hair drug screening remains the most complex to execute.

The Confirmation process for any positive screening samples is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing pre-confirmation as necessary. The entire procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is inspected under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair certification and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify substance use as far back as 90 days, contrasting with urine tests which provide a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Resistant to manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is extremely difficult, thus ensuring more precise results.
  • Offers historical insight: It reveals a pattern of drug usage over time, not solely recent occurrences.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: A drug takes about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to cost more than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variations: Variables such as hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the terminology "hair follicle tests", this type of test examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
