In Lake Oswego, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. If a test for drugs or alcohol is required, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair analysis, with facilities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair, whether from the crown or body, is necessary. The analysis can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or can be tailored to specific testing needs.

Hair follicle drug exams have increasingly become a favored testing method in recent years. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse specialists are selecting hair drug testing over the standard urine method. This type of test appeals to employers enforcing zero-tolerance drug policies, judicial requirements, or probation cases due to its extensive detection window of up to 90 days and is collected under observation, making tampering highly improbable. However, for detecting substance use within the last 5 days, urine tests remain the more precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as a significant means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged timeline of alcohol and drug traces by capturing biomarkers within the fiber of the developing hair. When taken near the head, hair samples can reveal up to roughly a 3-month period of drug and alcohol presence. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing approximately 200 hair strands (similar to a #2 pencil) clipped near the scalp gives 100mg of hair, which is ideal for examination and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels over 10, acquiring 150mg of the hair is advised. It is suggested to measure the sample using a jeweler’s scale. In the absence of scalp hair, an equal volume of body hair may be obtained. When indicating head hair, we mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair encompasses all other hair varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug testing process in the lab encompasses four principal phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the sample's initial integration into a lab’s system. This includes ensuring the sample is sealed and posted correctly, designating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any additional data input absent from an electronic chain of custody setup.

Screening represents an initial rapid evaluation for potential drug use. While screening is an economical approach to dismiss drug consumption among most samples, a positive result must be corroborated to be recognized in legal proceedings. Any sample that shows a tentative positive outcome during screening mandates further confirmation.

If the screening phase indicates a positive presumptive result, more hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction phase. Here, drugs are eluted from hair at significantly lower levels than in techniques like urinalysis or oral fluid analysis, thus making hair drug testing a highly intricate procedure.

Verification of any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples showing presumptive positives undergo washing before confirmation as necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the College of American Pathologists' Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug examinations can recognize drug consumption over a span of up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which possess a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to tamper with: Cheating a hair drug test is quite arduous, enhancing result precision.
  • Delivers usage history: It sheds light on a pattern of drug usage across time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are typically pricier compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Variable results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle under the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
