Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Logsden, Oregon. For those in need of hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our expertise lies in hair analysis, with testing facilities positioned throughout the United States to perform these evaluations. Generally, test subjects require 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas, enabling assessments for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or tailored testing alternatives.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has gained prominence in various fields. It is increasingly favored by employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals over the traditional urine test. Hair follicle drug tests, preferred by organizations with strict no-drug policies, judicial authorities, and probation scenarios, are advantageous due to their extended detection window of up to 90 days, an observed collection procedure, and higher resistance to deception, although urine tests remain most precise for 5-day drug use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly acknowledged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a historical record of alcohol and substances by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. When taken near the scalp, a hair sample can offer a detection period of around three months for alcohol and drugs. It is straightforward to collect, not easily altered, and convenient to transport.

A sample spanning 1.5 inches, consisting of roughly 200 strands of hair (similar in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, equates to 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for examination and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, 150mg of the sample is advised. Utilizing a jeweler’s scale to measure the sample is recommended. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. When referencing head hair, it pertains only to scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves the initial intake of a sample into a lab’s system. This process includes ensuring the sample was properly sealed and transported, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any supplementary data input not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of a preliminary rapid test for substance use. While Screening is a budget-friendly method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation to be valid in a legal context. Any samples that are initially positive in Screening require a subsequent confirmation.

Should a sample initially indicate positivity in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original sample for the Extraction stage. In this phase, substances are extracted from hair at a significantly lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to conduct.

Verification of any positive screening result is done via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All initially positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation as necessary. The entire lab process from Accessioning through to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests which have a more limited detection timeline.
  • High alter-resistance: Attempting to falsify a hair drug test is exceedingly difficult, enhancing result reliability.
  • Historical consumption insight: It can reveal a pattern of drug usage over time, rather than just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Cannot identify recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for substances to be detectable in hair.
  • Higher cost: Generally, hair drug tests are more costly than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand and not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
