Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in Lyons, Oregon. Specializing in hair and alcohol analysis, we have centers across the nation ready to conduct your hair test. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is needed. These tests can assess drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be customized.

Recently, hair follicle tests are increasingly employed for drug screening. Employers, legal systems, and substance abuse experts favor hair tests over urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probationers use these tests due to their 90-day detection window, observed collection process, and resistance to manipulation. For recent drug use, within 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair assessments are now regarded as an effective method for uncovering alcohol and drug use. Hair captures a lasting record of alcohol and other substances by seizing biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair strand. A sample collected near the scalp can provide up to a 3-month detection period for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch hair sample consisting of roughly 200 strands (approximately the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp equates to 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding ten, 150mg of hair is suggested. It is advisable to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is lacking, a comparable quantity of body hair may be used. References to head hair pertain to scalp hair solely. Body hair denotes all other hair variations (facial, auxiliary, etc.).

Procedure Summary

The four principal steps in processing a drug test outcome in the laboratory are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial organization of a sample within a lab’s system. This step includes ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and sent, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs a rapid initial assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-effective for eliminating drug usage in most samples, to be court-admissible, a positive screen demands further confirmation. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening require an additional confirmation.

Should a sample show presumptive positivity during Screening, extra hair is taken from the original sample and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are extracted from hair at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine, oral fluid), making hair drug screening particularly challenging.

Positive screening results undergo Confirmation via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples are cleansed prior to confirmation when necessary. The comprehensive lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review according to CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can uncover drug use up to 90 days compared to shorter detection periods of urine tests.
  • Challenging to falsify: The difficulty in cheating a hair drug test ensures more precise results.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a drug use pattern over time, rather than just recent usage.

Drawbacks:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs require about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be pricier than other testing methodologies.
  • Result variability: Differences such as hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although commonly referred to as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
