Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle testing services right in Malin, Oregon. When in need of a hair test for drugs or alcohol, Accredited Drug Testing is your go-to specialist with testing centers available nationwide to carry out hair tests. You typically need between 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body in most scenarios. Our hair tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or cater to other specialized needs.

The trend towards hair follicle drug tests has been growing over time. Employers, legal entities, and substance abuse professionals are now more inclined toward hair drug tests over the conventional urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with strict no-drug policies, for courts, and those on probation. They offer a superior detection window of about 90 days, are collected under observation, and are extremely difficult to tamper with. However, for drug use within the last five days, the urine test remains the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as a robust means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and various drugs by embedding biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a 3-month timeframe for detecting alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with roughly 200 hair strands (resembling the diameter of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, which is the ideal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests beyond 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advisable. We suggest measuring the specimen on a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not present, an equivalent amount of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we denote only scalp hair. Conversely, body hair encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary phases in the lab processing of a drug test result are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning comprises the introductory processing of a sample into a lab's system. This entails verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data entry excluded by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening consists of an initial brief assessment for drugs of abuse. While Screening is an economical approach to exclude drug usage on most samples, a positive result needs confirmation for court eligibility. Samples presumed positive in Screening necessitate further confirmation.

If a sample is presumed positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug testing is the most challenging method to administer.

Confirmation of any presumptive positive outcome in Screening is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS or LC/MS/MS. All samples presumed positive are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is inspected under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Strengths of hair drug testing:

  • Prolonged detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter timeframe.
  • Challenging to manipulate: It is incredibly tough to tamper with a hair drug test, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insight: It can reveal a timeline of drug use over an extended period, not solely recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Cannot ascertain recent use: It takes roughly 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally cost more than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Variability in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variance can impact the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: While often termed "hair follicle tests", the test analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
