Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Marion, Oregon. If you require a drug or alcohol test using hair, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in this area, with centers available in cities across the nation for hair testing. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of scalp or body hair can be used for testing. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly popular in drug screening procedures. Many workplaces, legal entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are opting for hair drug tests over the common urine tests. Employers enforcing strict no-drug policies, courts, and individuals on probation often rely on hair follicle testing. It offers extended detection spans of up to 90 days, is collected under supervision, and is challenging to manipulate. However, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Recognized as a potent device for identifying drug and alcohol consumption, hair testing captures a prolonged timeline of substance use by embedding biomarkers into the fibers of the hair as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer nearly a three-month detection period for alcohol and other drugs. It's easy to gather, somewhat tough to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

Securing a sample of 1.5 inches, amounting to around 200 hair strands (approximately the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, additional checks, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the specimen is urged. It's advisable to weigh the specimen with a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent quantity of body hair might be collected. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedures for processing a drug test result comprise four main phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary intake of a sample into a lab’s workflow. This includes confirming proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data entry not supplied by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening comprises an initial swift assessment for drug misuse. Although Screening is an economical strategy to detect drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be verified to hold up in court. Any samples that emerge as presumptively positive during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

In case a sample turns out as presumptively positive during the Screening stage, additional hair is taken from the primary specimen and set for Extraction. Here, drugs are extracted from hair at a notably reduced concentration as compared to other methods (like urine or oral fluid), which makes hair drug testing the most challenging method to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening outcome is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo a wash prior to confirmation if necessary. The complete laboratory progression from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair specification and the ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection time: Hair drug testing can reveal drug consumption up to 90 days back, in contrast to urine tests which have a shorter detection timeline.
  • Tough to manipulate: Manipulating a hair drug test is quite difficult, thereby enhancing result reliability.
  • Continuous data: It furnishes a record of drug consumption over a time span, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of revealing recent use: It requires around 5-7 days before drugs become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing methods usually cost more than other testing options.
  • Result fluctuances: Elements such as hair hue and personal variances in hair growth can impact the drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although frequently called "hair follicle tests", this test examines the hair strand, not the follicle under the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
