Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in McKenzie Bridge, Oregon. If seeking drug or alcohol analysis via hair, Accredited Drug Testing excels in this realm, with centers across every city in the nation that can execute hair assessments. A minimum of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is typically necessary. Hair tests are capable of detecting drugs, analyzing alcohol/ETG, or facilitating specialized analysis options.

Lately, the approach to drug assessments increasingly involves hair follicle testing. Numerous employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse professionals are shifting to a hair drug analysis over traditional urine evaluations. Employers with zero-tolerance stances, as well as judicial systems and individuals on probation, employ these tests. The key merit of hair drug assessments lies in their extended detection capability, up to 90 days, within observed collection circumstances, rendering deception nearly impossible. However, for detecting drug use within five days, urine tests maintain higher accuracy.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly regarded as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the developing hair strand, a long-term history of alcohol and other substances is maintained in hair samples. When collected near the scalp, hair can deliver a detection window of up to roughly 3 months for alcohol and various drugs. It is easy to gather, fairly resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) near the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample for testing and validation. For EtG enhancements, additional tests, and panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. It is recommended to measure the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be acquired. When discussing head hair, we exclusively mean scalp hair. Body hair includes all other types of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The four fundamental stages in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing phase of a sample into a laboratory system, ensuring the sample was properly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any additional data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening involves a preliminary quick assessment for substances subject to abuse. While Screening is cost-effective and suitable for eliminating drug consumption in most samples, any positive screen must be validated for it to be court-admissible. Samples with a presumptive positive result in Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

If a presumptive positive is identified during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. This phase involves extracting drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), contributing to the complexity of hair drug screening.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is performed utilizing GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS methods. All samples that test presumptive positive are washed as required before confirmation. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025 protocols.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use for a duration of up to 90 days, compared to urine tests with a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to deceive: Cheating on a hair drug test is exceptionally difficult, enhancing the accuracy of the results.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a pattern of drug use over time, beyond just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair roughly 5-7 days post-use.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are usually more costly than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the test examines the hair strand itself rather than the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
