Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Mission, Oregon. If you're in need of a drug or alcohol test via hair sample, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in this method, with facilities across all major cities in the USA that can conduct these tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or other body areas is typically required. Hair analysis can involve detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific options.

In recent times, drug testing methods have increasingly included hair follicle analysis. Employers, courts, and substance abuse experts are opting for hair drug tests over traditional urine tests. This method is often preferred by zero-tolerance policy employers, courts, and probation cases. The key advantage is its extended detection period for drugs, reaching up to 90 days, executed through a monitored collection process, making it nearly foolproof. However, for detecting drug use within the past 5 days, urine tests remain the most precise option.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is widely regarded as an effective method for detecting the use of drugs and alcohol. By trapping biomarkers within the fibers of the hair strand as it grows, hair provides a long-term history of alcohol and drug consumption. When hair is taken from close to the scalp, it can offer a detection window of up to approximately three months for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample of 1.5 inches comprising about 200 strands of hair (approximately the size of a #2 pencil) taken nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, which is the optimal amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests exceeding 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Use a jeweler’s scale for measuring the specimen's weight. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable volume of body hair can be used instead. Head hair specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas body hair includes all other types (such as facial and axillary hair).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four main steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the process of initially entering a sample into a laboratory's system. This step ensures the sample's proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any needed data entry, not captured by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary and cost-effective check for the presence of drugs. While effective for ruling out drug use in most samples, any positive result in Screening needs confirmation for court admissibility. Presumptive positives identified during Screening necessitate a secondary confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive after Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation. During Extraction, drugs are extracted from hair at much lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), posing a greater challenge in performing hair drug screenings.

Further confirmation of positive results from Screening is completed using methods such as GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Prior to confirmation, all presumptive positive samples undergo washing as necessary. The complete lab process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Long detection window: Hair drug tests offer up to a 90-day detection of drug use, compared to the shorter window of urine tests.
  • Difficulty to cheat: The results of hair drug tests are more accurate due to the difficulty in cheating.
  • Provides historical data: It can reveal patterns of drug use over time, extending beyond just recent activities.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days post-use.
  • Cost: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs compared to other testing methods.
  • Variations in results: The concentration of drug metabolites in hair can be influenced by factors like hair color and individual growth rates.

Note: Although often called "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
