Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Mount Hood Village, Oregon. Whether you need to test for drugs or alcohol, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, with facilities in every city across the country. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the scalp or body is required. Hair can be tested for various substances, including drugs, ETG alcohol markers, or customized options.

In recent years, the hair follicle drug test has become a common method for detecting drug use. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals often prefer this over standard urine tests. Hair testing is ideal for entities with strict drug policies and individuals on probation, offering a longer detection window—up to 90 days. The test is conducted under observation, making it hard to tamper with, though urine tests are still more precise for detecting recent usage within the last five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a prolonged record of alcohol and other substances by embedding biomarkers within the hair shaft as it grows. Collected near the scalp, hair offers a detection period of roughly three months for alcohol and substance use. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch collection of 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg, which is the preferred sample size for both initial tests and verifications. For testing EtG, additional tests, or panels beyond ten, 150mg of hair is suggested. The specimen should be weighed using a jeweler's scale. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable amount of body hair can be collected. References to head hair specifically mean scalp hair only, while body hair encompasses all other hair types, such as facial and axillary.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test outcomes involves the primary stages of Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins the sample's entry into the lab's procedures, ensuring the sample's proper sealing and shipment, linking it with a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and handling any data entry not completed by a digital chain of custody.

Screening offers preliminary results for potential drug abuse. It is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug use in most cases, but any positive results from Screening necessitate verification for court purposes. Samples that test positive in Screening require further Confirmation testing.

In the event of a presumptive positive outcome in Screening, additional hair from the initial sample is utilized for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at much lower concentrations than methods like urine or oral fluid, underscoring the complexity of hair drug analysis.

Verification of positive screenings is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to Confirmation as needed. The complete laboratory protocol from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and adherence to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests recognize drug use for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a more limited timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: Manipulating a hair test is notably challenging, ensuring more precise results.
  • Comprehensive history: Offers insights into long-term drug use habits rather than just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: It requires 5-7 days for drugs to become evident in hair.
  • Expense: Hair testing is usually costlier than other drug analysis methods.
  • Result variability: Variables like hair color and individual hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Although termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair shaft, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
