In Mulino, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services. Our expertise in hair testing is proven across the nation with centers available in every city to conduct these tests. Typically, having 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on your head or body is enough to undergo the test. Our hair tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, and are customizable for other testing needs.

Hair follicle drug tests are becoming a preferred method for drug testing due to their advantages over standard urine tests. More employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals are choosing this method. Hair tests provide a longer detection window, up to 90 days, and are observed during collection, minimizing the risk of tampering. However, for a reliable test of recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most effective.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective means for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers a prolonged record of alcohol and drug use by capturing biomarkers within the fibers of the expanding hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair can provide a detection timeframe for alcohol and drugs of up to around three months. Hair is straightforward to collect, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (roughly the size of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, will yield 100mg of hair, the perfect amount for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additions, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for weighing the sample. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable amount of body hair can be gathered. By head hair, we mean scalp hair only. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary four phases involved in the laboratory processing of a drug test outcome are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial incorporation of a sample into a laboratory's system. This process includes verifying the sample's proper sealing and shipping, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any extra data input not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening constitutes an initial rapid assessment for drug misuse. While Screening is a cost-efficient manner to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen mandates confirmation for court acceptance. Any samples with presumptive positivity in Screening undergo secondary confirmation.

Should a sample display presumptive positivity at the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are withdrawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in other procedures (e.g., urine or oral fluid), rendering hair drug screening the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening outcome is executed via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing before confirmation if required. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is examined under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to urine tests, which have a more limited detection duration.
  • Hard to deceive: Hair drug testing poses significant challenges to cheating, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Offers historical insights: It provides a chronology of drug use over a time span, rather than solely detecting recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair in about 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally involve higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Outcome variations: Variables like hair color and personal hair growth variations can impact the drug metabolite concentration within the hair.

Note: Despite frequently being termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Mulino, OR, hair follicle testing provides a clear edge over urine testing, delivering superior accuracy and reliability. While traditional urine tests only detect recent drug use, hair tests offer a broader detection window, providing a comprehensive substance use history and making them harder to compromise.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
