Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in North Benton, Oregon. Whether it's for drug or alcohol analysis, we’re experts in hair testing with centers across the nation capable of conducting hair tests. A length of 1.5 to 2 inches of hair is typically required and can be collected from head or body. Hair tests are available for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specialized tests.

Hair follicle testing has increasingly become a preferred method for drug screening in recent years. A growing number of employers, legal systems, and Substance Abuse professionals choose hair drug tests over conventional urine tests. Organizations with strict drug-free policies, judicial bodies, and probation officers use hair tests, benefiting from their extended detection window, which can trace drug use up to 90 days. Despite this, urine tests remain more precise for recent use detection.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has gained recognition as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a long-term record of alcohol and drug usage by capturing biomarkers within the hair's fibers as it grows. When taken from close to the scalp, hair can offer an estimated 3-month detection period for substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and effortless to send.

A 1.5-inch section of around 200 hairs (about the thickness of a #2 pencil) located nearest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the perfect specimen for both screening and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of hair is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair is not available, a comparable quantity of body hair is an alternative. References to head hair mean scalp hair specifically. Body hair includes all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory analysis of a drug test consists of four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning involves entering a sample into the lab’s system. This step verifies if the sample was properly sealed and delivered and assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), along with any extra data entry needed that’s not included in an electronic custody chain system.

Screening provides a rapid assessment for banned substances. Although screening is an economical technique to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive result must be confirmed for legal acceptability. Samples that presumptively test positive in Screening necessitate additional confirmation.

If a sample shows a presumptive positive result during Screening, more hair is extracted from the sample to prepare for Extraction. In this phase, drug extracts from hair are at a lower concentration compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing a challenging process.

Confirmation for any positive screening is done using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive samples are cleansed before confirmation, if needed. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is under review by CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and accredited to ISO / IEC 17025 criteria.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection duration: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests are limited to a shorter period.
  • Challenging to evade: It's notably tough to deceive a hair drug test, enhancing the reliability of results.
  • Retrospective data: It can delineate drug use tendencies over time, as opposed to only detecting recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs need about 5-7 days to be traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is typically pricier than alternative drug testing approaches.
  • Outcome discrepancies: Variables like hair color and personal differences in hair growth may influence drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Although labeled as "hair follicle tests," the procedure examines the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In North Benton, OR, hair follicle testing is something that cannot be overlooked when compared to urine tests. A major reason is the superior detection accuracy that hair testing provides. Its ability to reliably pinpoint a range of substances makes it more dependable for serious testing needs, distinguishing it from traditional urine methods that have a narrower spectrum of detection.

Extended Detection Window

The ability to trace drug use over an extended period sets hair follicle testing apart in North Benton, OR. With the capacity to detect substances for up to 90 days, it offers employers an extensive overview of a person's substance use history. This long-term detection is invaluable for making informed employment decisions and maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

An impressive benefit of hair follicle tests in North Benton, OR, is their resilience against tampering. The method's design leaves little room for adulteration, as samples are collected under stringent conditions. This reduces the risk of false results, offering a trustworthy testing choice for employers committed to transparency and integrity.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
