Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Northeast Umatilla, Oregon. If you're seeking a hair drug or alcohol screening, Accredited Drug Testing specializes in such tests with centers available nationwide, including all cities, capable of performing hair tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head's crown or body are needed. These tests can identify drugs, alcohol/ETG, or offer other tailored hair testing services.

In recent times, the prevalence of hair follicle drug tests in determining drug use has increased. Employers, judicial systems, and Substance Abuse experts often mandate hair drug tests over urine tests. Hair follicle drug screenings are favored by zero-tolerance employers, courts, and those on probation. A major advantage is the extended drug detection period of about 90 days, collected under direct observation, and extremely difficult to manipulate. Nonetheless, for detecting recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain the most precise method.

What it is, How it works

The utilization of hair testing is increasingly recognized as a robust means for detecting drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains a significant historical record of alcohol and drugs by capturing biomarkers within the hair strand fibers as they grow. When hair is gathered close to the scalp, it can offer a detection timeframe of up to roughly three months for alcohol and other substances. This method is straightforward for collection, relatively resistant to tampering, and convenient to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment containing roughly 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg of hair, the optimal sample size for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional tests, and/or analyses exceeding 10-panel thresholds, a 150mg specimen is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for precise specimen weighing. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be obtained. Reference to head hair specifically denotes scalp hair. Body hair encompasses all other forms (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test results encompasses four primary phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the preliminary handling of a sample into a laboratory’s system. This step encompasses verifying appropriate sealing and shipping of the sample, allocating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any additional data required that is absent from an electronic chain of custody framework.

Screening constitutes an initial, expedited evaluation for potential drug abuse. Though screening serves as a cost-effective strategy to rule out drug use in most samples, any positive screening outcome necessitates a subsequent confirmation to be deemed court-admissible. Samples with presumptive positive results from screening must undergo additional validation.

Should a sample emerge as presumptively positive during the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original specimen for the Extraction process. Drugs are extracted from hair at notably lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening a particularly challenging methodology to execute.

The confirmation of any positive screening findings is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples showing presumptive positive results undergo washing before confirmation if required. The comprehensive laboratory process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is scrutinized in accordance with both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection duration.
  • Challenging to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is notably difficult, thereby enhancing result accuracy.
  • Supplies usage history: Offers a record of drug consumption patterns over time, not just recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: Drugs become detectable in hair in roughly 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing is generally costlier than other drug testing methods.
  • Result variations: Factors like hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Despite the frequent reference as "hair follicle tests," the analysis actually examines the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
