Located in Oak Hills, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments. Whether you require a drug or alcohol analysis via hair, our expertise lies in hair testing with facilities spanning cities Nationwide capable of conducting these tests. Ideally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is needed. Our tests can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG or offer other tailor-made testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become more prevalent in drug testing protocols. Various employers, judicial entities, and Substance Abuse experts now prefer hair analysis over the traditional urine test. This method is favored by employers enforcing strict anti-drug policies, legal systems, and probation officers due to its extended drug detection, often up to 90 days, and the observed collection process making it hard to manipulate. However, urine tests remain superior for recent drug use detection, specifically within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as a critical method for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. By capturing biomarkers within the strands, hair offers a prolonged record of substance use. Hair collected near the scalp can reveal drug and alcohol use over approximately three months. The collection process is easy, hard to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of roughly 200 hair strands, about the thickness of a #2 pencil, near the scalp yields 100mg, ideal for screening and confirmation. For tests such as EtG enhancements or those surpassing 10 panels, a sample weight of 150mg is suggested. Using a jeweler's scale to weigh the sample is advisable. Should scalp hair not be available, an equivalent amount of body hair is acceptable. "Head hair" refers specifically to scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The main steps in a laboratory drug test process are Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning includes the initial sample handling in the lab's system by confirming proper sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finalizing data entry not provided by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary review for substances. Although it's cost-effective for excluding drug use in most samples, a positive result in Screening requires confirmation for court validity. Presumptively positive samples must undergo further confirmation.

If a sample tests positive in Screening, more hair is taken and readied for Extraction. This process isolates drugs at lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair testing uniquely challenging.

Confirmation follows a positive Screening result using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Positive samples are cleansed before confirmation if necessary. The entire process, from Accessioning to Confirmation, undergoes scrutiny under the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection range: Hair drug tests identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a limited range.
  • Hard to manipulate: Hair tests are challenging to cheat, enhancing result reliability.
  • Shows usage trends: It tracks a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Limitations:

  • Cannot detect recent use: There's a delay of 5-7 days before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are typically costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Result variations: Aspects like hair color and personal growth differences can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: While often termed as "hair follicle tests", the focus is on analyzing the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
