Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Oakridge, Oregon. Whether you require a hair drug test or an alcohol test, our expertise lies in hair testing with centers across cities nationwide to facilitate your needs. Typically, you need 1.5 to 2 inches of hair on the crown or body for testing. Analyses can include drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specific hair testing options.

The hair follicle drug test has gained prevalence recently as a method for drug testing. Many companies, judicial entities, and substance abuse professionals prefer this over conventional urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and those on probation use hair tests for their extended detection window, which can span up to 90 days. Although nearly impossible to manipulate due to observed collection, urine tests remain optimal for detecting very recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing has emerged as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair provides a comprehensive history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the hair shaft as it grows. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer roughly a 3-month window for alcohol and drug detection. Hair is easy to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to send.

A 1.5-inch segment consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (comparable to the thickness of a #2 pencil) near the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, additional tests, and/or panels exceeding 10, a sample of 150mg is advised. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair may be obtained. Note that head hair refers specifically to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four primary steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. It involves verifying proper sealing and shipping of the sample, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any supplemental data entry not available via an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening serves as a preliminary assessment for drug presence. While it is a cost-efficient method to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive screen must be confirmed for legal admissibility. Presumptively positive samples from Screening require secondary validation.

During the Screening stage, if a sample shows presumptive positivity, additional hair is extracted from the primary specimen and prepared for Extraction. This stage involves retrieving drugs from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug testing the most challenging methodology.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used to confirm any positive screening results. All presumptive positive samples are washed prior to confirmation when necessary. The entire process from Accessioning to Confirmation is conducted under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, in contrast to the shorter detection period of urine tests.
  • Difficult to manipulate: Cheating a hair drug test is very challenging, resulting in more reliable outcomes.
  • Offers historical data: It can indicate patterns of drug use over time, rather than solely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Unable to detect recent use: Drugs become detectable in hair approximately 5-7 days after use.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing tends to be more costly than alternative testing methods.
  • Variability in results: Elements such as hair color and individual growth differences can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in hair.

Note: Despite the common reference as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is performed on the hair shaft, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
