Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing services in Oceanside, Oregon. If you're in need of a hair or alcohol test, Accredited Drug Testing has expertise in hair testing, with centers nationwide available for conducting tests. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or provide other tailored testing options.

Recently, hair follicle drug testing has become a common method for drug screening. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts increasingly prefer hair over urine tests. Hair follicle tests are favored by organizations with strict drug policies, and courts for those on probation. The key advantage is the extended drug use detection period of about 90 days, making it almost impossible to tamper with, although urine tests remain most accurate for recent usage within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly recognized as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair retains long-term evidence of substances by embedding biomarkers within its fibers. When collected from the scalp, it offers a detection range of roughly 3 months for both alcohol and drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, challenging to tamper with, and convenient for transport.

Gathering a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (similar in size to a #2 pencil) from near the scalp produces around 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for screening and confirmation tests. For EtG tests, add-ons, and tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. Using a jeweler’s scale is recommended for weighing the sample. In cases where scalp hair is inaccessible, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be collected. "Head hair" specifically denotes scalp hair, whereas "body hair" refers to all other hair forms (such as facial or axillary hair).

Process Overview

The procedure for processing a drug test in the lab encompasses four key steps: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the phase where samples are initially processed into the lab's system. This step verifies that samples remain sealed and are correctly shipped, assigns a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any extra data input absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening is a preliminary check for the presence of substances. Although it offers a cost-effective way to exclude drug presence for many samples, positive screens require confirmation to be valid in legal settings. A presumptively positive Screening sample necessitates a further confirmatory step.

If Screening indicates a presumptive positive, additional hair from the original sample is used for Extraction. In this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations than other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which distinguishes hair drug screening as the most complex method to execute.

Confirmation of positive Screening outcomes is achieved using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives undergo cleaning before confirmation if necessary. The complete lab process from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and the ISO/IEC 17025 standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can trace drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with a shorter detection timeframe.
  • High resistance to tampering: It is extremely difficult to tamper with a hair drug test, ensuring greater reliability of results.
  • Historical insight: It offers an understanding of drug involvement over time, not only recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of identifying recent use: Typically, it requires 5-7 days for substances to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than alternative drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Differences in hair color and individual hair growth can influence drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite often being referred to as "hair follicle tests", this testing method actually analyzes the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
