Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug screenings in Pine Hollow, Oregon. For those needing hair-based drug or alcohol testing, our expertise in hair analysis is complemented by our nationwide network of testing centers. Typically, hair from the scalp of 1.5 to 2 inches is necessary, though body hair can be used. We offer hair analyses for drugs, alcohol/ETG, and other specialized options.

Recently, the preference for drug testing methodologies has leaned increasingly towards hair follicle drug tests. Many employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse professionals now opt for hair tests over standard urine analysis. Hair follicle testing is favored by employers with strict anti-drug policies, courts, and probation services. Its advantage lies in the extended detection window, typically up to 90 days, ensuring nearly cheat-proof results. However, urine tests remain optimal for detecting recent use within five days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is regarded as an effective means to detect drug and alcohol usage. Hair captures long-term traces of alcohol and drugs by embedding biomarkers within the growing hair strands. When collected near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window of up to 3 months for alcohol and drugs. Hair is easy to gather, somewhat challenging to tamper with, and simple to transport.

A 1.5-inch sample of around 200 hair strands (roughly equivalent to a #2 pencil's width) taken nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg of hair, the optimal amount for analysis and validation. For EtG, additional tests, or tests above 10 panels, it's suggested to collect 150mg of the specimen. It's recommended to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't accessible, an equal quantity of body hair can be used. When referring to head hair, we mean scalp hair exclusively. Body hair encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results involves four primary stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning entails the initial input of a sample into a lab’s system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any supplementary data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening pertains to an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although Screening is a cost-efficient method to eliminate drug presence in most samples, a positive screening necessitates confirmation to be legally credible. Samples that test presumptively positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

If a sample exhibits a presumptive positive during the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepared for Extraction. During this phase, drugs are drawn from hair at significantly lower concentrations than in alternative methodologies (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation for any positive screening results is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive samples undergo washing prior to confirmation as required. The comprehensive laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair standards and the ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection span: Hair drug tests can identify drug usage for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a shorter detection time frame.
  • Hard to tamper: It is very challenging to tamper with a hair drug test, rendering the results more dependable.
  • Offers historical insight: It can indicate a pattern of drug use across a duration, not just recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent consumption: It takes approximately 5-7 days for drugs to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur higher costs than other testing approaches.
  • Result variability: Factors like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can influence the concentration of drug metabolites in the hair.

Note: While commonly called "hair follicle tests", the analysis examines the hair strand itself, not the hair follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
