In Roseburg North, Oregon, Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing solutions. Our hair tests are designed for both drug and alcohol detection, carried out nationwide, with centers in every city. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary, and both head and body hair are acceptable. We provide specialized testing for drugs and alcohol/ETG, along with other tailored options.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become prevalent methods for detection. Courts, employers, and Substance Abuse experts increasingly turn to this method over urine tests. Firms with stringent drug policies, legal jurisdictions, and probationary monitoring all prefer hair tests due to their long detection span of up to 90 days, with observed sample collection, making tampering nearly impossible. Yet, for drug use within 5 days, urine tests remain the gold standard.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is now recognized as an effective method for detecting substance use. Hair acts as a long-term record for alcohol and drugs by capturing indicators within the hair's growing strands. When taken near the scalp, hair can offer a detection window for alcohol and drugs up to around three months. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

Taking a sample of 1.5 inches consisting of roughly 200 hair strands (around the size of a #2 pencil) closest to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, the ideal sample for both screening and confirmation. For EtG addons, and/or assessments above 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. We suggest using a jeweler’s scale for specimen weighing. If scalp hair is unavailable, an equivalent amount of body hair can be collected. When mentioning head hair, we refer exclusively to scalp hair. Body hair includes all other varieties (facial, axillary, etc.).

Overview of the Procedure

The primary steps in the laboratory process of generating a drug test result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial processing of a sample within a laboratory's system. This process ensures the sample was sealed and shipped correctly, allocates a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes any other data input not supplied by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening conducts an initial brief evaluation for drugs of abuse. While it is a cost-efficient method to rule out drug use in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation for court admissibility. Samples deemed presumptively positive during Screening need a subsequent confirmation.

For samples presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is retrieved from the initial specimen for Extraction. This stage extracts drugs from hair at significantly lower concentrations than alternative methods (ex. urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening the most challenging methodology to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is performed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positive specimens are cleansed as necessary before confirmation. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes review under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO/IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can reveal drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection period.
  • Challenging to compromise: It is extremely difficult to alter the results of a hair drug test, enhancing accuracy.
  • Offers historical perspective: It can highlight a pattern of drug use over time, rather than just recent usage.

Challenges:

  • Cannot detect recent use: It generally takes around 5-7 days for drugs to manifest in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests tend to be more costly than other testing methods.
  • Result variability: Variables such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can influence drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Often called "hair follicle tests," the test itself examines the hair strand, not the follicle underneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
