Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug assessments in Saint Helens, Oregon. Whether it's for drug or alcohol screening, we specialize in hair tests and provide services in cities nationwide. Typically, about 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head crown or body is necessary. Our hair tests can evaluate drugs, alcohol/ETG, among other tailored options.

In recent times, hair follicle drug tests have become a standard in drug testing. Many employers, judiciary bodies, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair drug tests over urine tests. Organizations with zero-tolerance drug policies, courts, and those on probation benefit greatly from these tests. The key advantage is the extended detection period, typically up to 90 days, along with a monitored collection process, making tampering almost impossible. However, for detecting recent drug use within 5 days, urinalysis remains the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of alcohol and other drugs by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of a developing hair strand. When gathered near the scalp, hair offers a detection timeframe of roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Hair is straightforward to collect, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to transport.

A hair sample of 1.5 inches, consisting of about 200 strands (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp yields 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and confirmation. For EtG, supplements, and/or examinations beyond ten panels, it is advised to have 150mg of the specimen. We recommend using a jeweler’s scale to measure the specimen’s weight. In the absence of scalp hair, a comparable quantity of body hair may be obtained. When referencing head hair, we specifically mean scalp hair. Body hair signifies any other type of hair (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory evaluation of a drug test result comprises four key phases: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the preliminary handling of a sample within a lab’s framework. This stage includes ensuring the sample’s appropriate sealing and shipping, generating a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and performing any further data entry not covered by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. Although Screening is an economical approach to eliminate drug use in most samples, a positive screening requires validation to be valid in legal proceedings. Samples preliminarily positive during Screening necessitate a secondary verification.

For samples showing a presumptive positive in the Screening phase, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for preparation in the Extraction stage. Here, drugs are removed from hair at much lesser concentrations compared to other techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), establishing hair drug screening as a more challenging methodology.

Validation of any positive screening outcomes is achieved through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptive positives are cleansed before confirmation when necessary. The whole laboratory procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is evaluated under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assays can identify drug usage up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which have a shorter detection scope.
  • Difficult to manipulate: It is exceedingly challenging to falsify a hair drug test, enhancing result reliability.
  • Offers historical data: It supplies an account of drug consumption over time, not just recent use.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent use: Drugs generally become detectable in hair after approximately 5-7 days.
  • Expense: Hair drug assays usually incur higher costs than other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite concentration in the hair.

Note: Though typically named "hair follicle tests", the analysis involves the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
