Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug tests throughout Scotts Mills, Oregon. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and our nationwide locations including all cities are equipped to administer these tests. Individuals need 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair for sampling. Hair tests cover detection of drugs, alcohol/ETG, and can be tailored for specific testing needs.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become increasingly utilized in drug screening processes. Many organizations, judicial systems, and substance abuse specialists now prefer hair tests over the conventional urine tests. Hair follicle testing is employed by entities with zero-tolerance drug policies, by the courts, and for probation-monitoring individuals. Its main advantage is the detection range, revealing drug use up to 90 days. This process ensures authentic results as it is hard to tamper with, though urine tests remain accurate for drug detection within a 5-day period.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now regarded as an effective method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures a long-term record of drug and alcohol use by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair shaft. A sample obtained near the scalp offers up to a 90-day detection period for alcohol and other substances. The process of collecting hair is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and easy to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches, consisting of approximately 200 hair strands (equivalent to the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal amount for both screening and validation. For EtG, additional testing, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, 150mg of the sample is advised. It's suggested to weigh the sample using a jeweler’s scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, an equivalent quantity of body hair can be obtained. The term head hair exclusively refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of a drug test result involves four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning begins with the initial entry of a sample into a laboratory’s system, confirming correct sealing and shipping, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any other data entry that isn’t handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening offers an initial rapid evaluation for substance abuse. Though Screening is a cost-efficient approach to exclude drug use in most samples, a positive result must be validated for legal admissibility. Any samples that appear positive in Screening require a follow-up confirmation.

When a sample is noted as potentially positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original sample and prepped for Extraction. At this phase, drugs are retrieved from hair at a significantly lower concentration compared to other methods (such as urine or oral fluid), highlighting the complexity of hair drug screening.

Any positive screening outcomes are confirmed using GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All samples testing positive on a presumptive basis are cleansed prior to validation as needed. The full laboratory procedure, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is examined under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair category and the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection timeframe.
  • Hard to manipulate: It is quite challenging to deceive a hair drug test, thus ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insight: It provides a usage pattern over a period rather than just immediate use.

Limitations:

  • Unable to identify current use: It requires about 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests generally incur more cost compared to other drug testing techniques.
  • Result variability: Elements such as hair color and individual discrepancies in hair growth can influence the drug metabolite levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", the analysis is conducted on the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
