Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug evaluations in Sisters, Oregon. When in need of a hair drug or alcohol assessment, Accredited Drug Testing excels in hair testing, with locations available nationwide to conduct these tests. Generally, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the head or body is required. Hair tests can screen for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other tailored options.

Recently, the trend in drug testing has shifted towards using hair follicle tests. Numerous employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals prefer hair over urine tests. These tests are ideal for employers with stringent drug policies, courts, and probation individuals. Hair follicle tests offer a more extended drug detection period, up to 90 days, with monitored collection, making them almost impossible to tamper with. However, for drug use within the past five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as a robust means for uncovering drug and alcohol consumption. Hair captures long-term evidence of substance use by securing biomarkers within the strands as they grow. When obtained near the scalp, hair can reveal drug or alcohol use within an approximate period of 90 days. This method is straightforward to collect, challenging to tamper with, and convenient to transport.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches and consisting of around 200 strands (approximately the girth of a #2 pencil) close to the scalp provides 100mg of hair, ideal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG tests, add-ons, or panels exceeding 10, it's advisable to use 150mg. We suggest weighing the sample using a jeweler's scale. Should scalp hair be unavailable, a comparable amount of body hair is acceptable. When mentioning head hair, it specifically refers to scalp hair, while body hair encompasses all other types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory procedure for processing drug test outcomes includes four pivotal stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning consists of the preliminary incorporation of a sample into the lab’s system. This process involves ensuring the sample’s appropriate sealing and dispatch, assigning it a unique LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing any missing data not supplied electronically.

Screening involves an initial rapid assessment for drugs of abuse. Although cost-efficient for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive Screening result necessitates confirmation for legal validity. All samples flagged as presumptively positive in Screening require further confirmation.

If a sample is identified as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample and prepped for Extraction. At this juncture, drugs are isolated from hair at considerably lower concentrations compared to other methods such as urine or oral fluid, making hair drug screening exceptionally challenging.

For Confirmation, any positive Screening results are verified via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All presumptively positive specimens undergo a washing procedure before confirmation if necessary. The entire laboratory sequence from Accessioning to Confirmation is subject to inspection under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and in accordance with ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests can recognize drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection timeline.
  • Difficulty in manipulation: Cheating a hair drug test is highly challenging, thereby enhancing accuracy.
  • Historical consumption patterns: It provides insights into drug use trends over time, not merely recent use.

Limitations:

  • Incapability to identify recent use: Drugs take about 5-7 days to become detectable in hair.
  • Price: Generally, hair drug tests are pricier than alternative drug screening methods.
  • Result variability: Factors such as hair color and individual hair growth variations can impact drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Although colloquially termed "hair follicle tests", the analysis focuses on the hair strand rather than the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
