Accredited Drug Testing provides comprehensive hair follicle drug tests in South Umpqua, Oregon. For anyone requiring a drug or alcohol test through hair sampling, our expertise lies in hair testing. We have testing facilities across various cities nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair are necessary from the head or body. Hair analysis covers drugs, alcohol/ETG, and customized testing solutions.

Recently, hair follicle drug tests have become a preferred method for conducting drug tests. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts often opt for hair tests over conventional urine screenings. Hair follicle tests serve those with zero-tolerance policies on drug use, and individuals on probation. Their main advantage is detecting drug use for up to 90 days through supervised collection, making them challenging to tamper with, whereas for recent drug use within five days, urine tests remain more precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is increasingly viewed as a robust method for identifying drug and alcohol use. It offers an extended history of substance use by embedding biomarkers in the fibers of the developing hair strand. When sourced near the scalp, hair can reveal a detection period of up to roughly three months for alcohol and various drugs. Collection of hair is straightforward, relatively hard to tamper with, and straightforward to transport.

A 1.5-inch segment, consisting of around 200 strands of hair (comparable in size to a #2 pencil) proximal to the scalp, yields 100mg of hair, which is the optimal quantity for screening and confirmation processes. For EtG add-ons and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advisable. It's recommended to weigh the specimen using a jeweler’s scale. If scalp hair isn't available, an equivalent amount of body hair may be taken. Head hair specifically refers to scalp hair only, while body hair includes all other hair types (e.g., facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The drug test result laboratory procedure encompasses four essential stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial intake of a sample into the laboratory’s system. This process verifies the sample’s proper sealing and shipping, assigns a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concludes any supplementary data entry absent from an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening performs an initial rapid assessment for substances of abuse. While Screening offers a cost-efficient method for ruling out drug use in most samples, a positive screen necessitates confirmation for court admissibility. Any Screening-presumptive positives do require further confirmation.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the original specimen and readied for Extraction. During this stage, drugs are extracted from hair at significantly lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), which is why hair drug screening is noted as the most challenging to execute.

GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS confirm any positive screening outcome. All samples testing presumptive positive are cleaned before confirmation as necessary. The complete laboratory process from Accessioning to Confirmation is scrutinized under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation as well as the ISO / IEC 17025 standard accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug assessments can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests that have a briefer detection range.
  • Hard to falsify: Cheating a hair drug test is notably hard, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Delivers historical insight: It supplies drug use patterns over time, instead of indicating only recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent use: It generally takes 5-7 days for drugs to be observable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests usually exceed the cost of other testing options.
  • Result variances: Factors like hair color and personal hair growth differences can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: Although commonly called "hair follicle tests", the examination analyzes the hair strand, not the follicle found under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Compared to traditional urine tests, hair follicle testing in South Umpqua, OR, offers superior detection accuracy and reliability. It has a longer detection window, allowing for broader assessment of drug history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
