Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Summit, Oregon. For those requiring hair drug or alcohol tests, our expertise in hair testing is unmatched, and we provide services in all cities Nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of crown or body hair is needed. Our tests detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, and allow for other tailored testing options.

The shift toward hair follicle drug testing has become prevalent recently with many employers, courts, and Substance Abuse experts preferring it over traditional urine tests. Employers enforcing zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation personnel often rely on these tests. The chief advantage is an extended detection window for up to 90 days and an observed collection that is hard to counter. Urine tests remain most accurate for recent drug use, within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis has emerged as an effective method for identifying the use of drugs and alcohol. Hair captures a prolonged history of substances by embedding biomarkers in the strands as they grow. When trimmed near the scalp, hair samples can reveal substance use for up to a 3-month period for both alcohol and other drugs. Hair collection is straightforward, moderately resistant to tampering, and convenient for shipping.

Collecting a 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the thickness of a #2 pencil) from near the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the recommended quantity for initial and confirmatory testing. For extended panels, such as EtG tests, 150mg is advised. A jeweler’s scale is suggested for precise measurement. If scalp hair is not an option, an equivalent quantity of body hair may be used. When referring to head hair, it indicates scalp hair alone. Body hair encompasses all other types, like facial or axillary hair.

Process Overview

The laboratory processing of drug test results includes four key stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial phase where a sample is integrated into a laboratory’s system. This step ensures the sample is sealed and shipped correctly, assigns it a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completes extra data entry if not already provided via an electronic chain of custody process.

Screening is the first, rapid assessment for drug abuse. Although Screening is economical for ruling out drug usage in most samples, a positive screen requires confirmation to be legally valid. Samples indicating positive outcomes in Screening need secondary verification.

If a sample shows positive in the Screening phase, more hair is extracted from the original sample and prepared for Extraction. In this process, drugs are isolated from hair at concentrations lower than those in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), presenting a challenge in hair drug analysis execution.

Any positive screening outcome is verified through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. Before confirmation, all samples that presumptively test positive undergo necessary washing. The complete laboratory workflow from Accessioning to Confirmation is reviewed under the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and is accredited by ISO / IEC 17025 standards.

Benefits of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, whereas urine tests have a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: Cheating a hair test is notably challenging, yielding more reliable results.
  • Chronological data: It outlines a pattern of drug use over time, not just recent activity.

Drawbacks:

  • Unable to identify recent use: It typically takes 5-7 days for drugs to become detectable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair tests are generally more costly than other drug testing alternatives.
  • Result variability: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth differences can alter drug metabolite concentrations in hair.

Note: Despite being termed "hair follicle tests", the test itself assesses the hair strand, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

In Summit, OR, hair follicle testing prevails over traditional urine tests by offering superior detection accuracy and reliability. The extended detection period uniquely provided by hair follicle tests captures a broader drug use history, making them invaluable for employers needing a comprehensive assessment. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
