Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug testing in Three Rivers, Oregon. If a hair or alcohol test is needed, we specialize in these tests with centers nationwide. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is required for testing. Hair samples can be tested for drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other customized options.

In recent years, hair follicle drug tests have become more frequent in drug testing methods. Employers, courts, and substance abuse professionals now often prefer hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with zero-tolerance policies, courts, and probation programs use these tests. The key advantage of hair tests is their longer detection window—usually up to 90 days—collected under observation, making them hard to cheat. However, urine tests remain the most accurate for recent drug use within 5 days.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is acknowledged as an effective technique for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers an extended timeline of substance use by encapsulating biomarkers within the growing hair fibers. When taken from close to the scalp, hair provides up to a roughly 3-month detection timeframe for alcohol and other substances. Collecting hair is straightforward, relatively resistant to tampering, and simple to send.

A 1.5-inch section comprising approximately 200 hair strands (comparable in width to a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp will yield 100mg, which is the prime sample size for analysis and verification. For EtG, extras, and/or tests exceeding 10 panels, a 150mg sample is advised. We suggest measuring the sample using a jeweler's scale. If scalp hair isn't available, a comparable amount of body hair may be gathered. By head hair, we mean only scalp hair. Body hair denotes all other hair forms (facial, underarm, etc.).

Process Overview

The four primary stages in the lab processing of a drug testing result include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning encompasses the initial handling of a sample into the lab’s system, which involves confirming that the sample was securely sealed and dispatched, generating a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and finishing any extra data logging not accounted for by an electronic chain of custody.

Screening includes a preliminary rapid test for drugs. Although screening provides a cost-efficient method to exclude drug usage in most samples, a positive screening must be validated for legal acceptability. Hence, any samples that show presumptive positives during screening require an additional verification.

When a sample tests presumptively positive in Screening, more hair is taken from the original sample for Extraction. During this phase, substances are removed from hair at a far lower concentration than in other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), making hair drug screening one of the most difficult procedures to execute.

Confirmation of any positive screening result is done through GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS techniques. All presumptive positive samples are cleaned before confirmation if necessary. The full lab procedure from Accessioning to Confirmation is audited under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair classification and the ISO / IEC 17025 accrediting standards.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug tests identify drug use up to 90 days, unlike urine tests which report a shorter detection span.
  • Hard to manipulate: It's tough to manipulate a hair drug test, ensuring more precise outcomes.
  • Offers historical insights: It demonstrates a trend of drug use over some time, not merely recent consumption.

Limitations:

  • Inability to uncover recent use: Drugs take approximately 5-7 days to become apparent in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests are generally costlier than other testing techniques.
  • Inconsistencies in outcomes: Elements like hair color and individual hair growth variations can influence drug metabolite concentration in hair.

Note: While frequently termed "hair follicle tests", the assessment targets the hair strand and not the follicle beneath the scalp

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Hair follicle testing in Three Rivers, OR surpasses traditional urine tests in terms of detection and reliability. One primary advantage is its ability to uncover drug use over a more extended period, while urine tests are limited to recent consumptions. This makes hair testing a more robust option for employers who value thoroughness.

Compared to urine tests, hair testing offers superior detection accuracy. Employers, legal systems, and rehabilitation centers prefer it due to its resistance to tampering. In a direct comparison, hair tests provide a comprehensive history of substance use, which is invaluable for many organizations aiming to maintain a drug-free environment.

Extended Detection Window

In Three Rivers, OR, hair follicle testing is celebrated for its extended detection window. This method can pinpoint drug usage within a timeline of up to 90 days, offering employers a profound insight into an individual’s substance history. Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
