Accredited Drug Testing offers comprehensive hair follicle drug screening services in Tumalo, Oregon. Whether you need a hair-based drug or alcohol assessment, our facility specializes in this method, with testing sites in cities across the nation ready to conduct your analysis. Typically, 1.5 to 2 inches of hair from the crown or body is required for the test, which can be tailored to detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or other specifics as needed.

Over the years, hair follicle drug testing has become more common in drug screening methods. Employers, judicial systems, and substance abuse experts are turning to hair tests over the traditional urine analysis. Favored by organizations with strict no-drug policies and by legal entities and individuals under supervision, the test's primary advantage is its extended detection period of up to 90 days, making it hard to manipulate and ensuring a reliable collection process. Still, for drug use in the recent five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair testing is now recognized as a potent method for identifying drug and alcohol consumption. It offers a prolonged history by embedding biomarkers within the strands of hair as it grows. Hair samples taken near the scalp can reveal a timeline of up to three months for substance presence, including alcohol and drugs. The collection is straightforward, somewhat resistant to tampering, and convenient for transportation.

A sample measuring 1.5 inches with approximately 200 hair strands (similar to the width of a #2 pencil) near the scalp can weigh 100mg, which is optimal for both screening and confirmation. For EtG, additional analyses, and tests beyond 10 panels, a sample of 150mg is advisable. Using a jeweler's scale is recommended for accurate specimen weighing. If scalp hair is not available, a similar quantity of body hair can be taken. "Head hair" means scalp hair, while "body hair" encompasses all other hair types (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The laboratory drug test procedure involves four main stages: Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning is the initial processing stage where a sample enters a lab's system, involving checks for proper sealing and shipment, the assignment of a LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and completing missing data entry if not provided by an electronic system.

Screening is an initial swift assessment for drug abuse. Although a cost-effective measure to eliminate drug use in most samples, any positive screening results require confirmation to be valid in legal settings. Samples showing presumptive positivity in Screening need secondary verification.

For any presumptively positive samples in Screening, additional hair is extracted from the initial sample for the Extraction process. During Extraction, the substance is removed from hair at much lower concentrations compared to other methods (e.g., urine or oral fluid), explaining why hair drug screening is the most challenging method to execute.

For any positive result during Screening, GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS is used for Confirmation. Samples marked as presumptive positives undergo washing as required before confirmation. Each step, from Accessioning to Confirmation, is thoroughly reviewed under the standards set by both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair designation and the accreditation to ISO / IEC 17025.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection window: Hair drug tests can identify drug use for up to 90 days, unlike urine tests with shorter detection periods.
  • Challenging to deceive: Hair drug tests are tough to manipulate, enhancing result accuracy.
  • Shows usage patterns: It reveals drug use trends over time, not merely recent usage.

Limitations:

  • Incapable of detecting recent usage: Drugs take about 5-7 days to appear in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug tests typically cost more than other testing methods.
  • Result variations: Elements like hair color and individual growth rates can alter metabolite concentration levels in the hair.

Note: Although commonly termed as "hair follicle tests", this examination analyzes the hair strand itself, not the follicle beneath the scalp.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
