Accredited Drug Testing provides thorough hair follicle drug testing services in Ukiah, Oregon. If you require a hair drug or alcohol test, our expertise in hair testing is unrivaled, with facilities nationwide equipped to conduct your test. At least 1.5 to 2 inches of head or body hair is generally needed for testing. Hair samples can detect drugs, alcohol/ETG, or be tailored to specific testing requirements.

The use of hair follicle drug tests has grown more prevalent in contemporary drug testing practices. Various organizations like employers, courts, and Substance Abuse professionals favor hair tests over standard urine tests. Employers with strict no-drug policies, as well as courts and probation officers, commonly use hair tests. The significant advantage lies in the extended detection period of drugs, potentially revealing up to 90 days of use, challenging to tamper with. However, for detecting recent usage within the past five days, urine tests remain the most precise.

What it is, How it works

Hair analysis is increasingly recognized as an effective method to identify drug and alcohol consumption. Hair offers an extended record of alcohol and drug presence by embedding biomarkers within the fibers of the growing hair. When clipped near the scalp, hair reveals roughly a 3-month period for detecting alcohol and other substances. Hair collection is straightforward, resilient to tampering, and convenient for transport.

A 1.5-inch segment of about 200 hair strands (roughly the width of a #2 pencil) nearest to the scalp equates to 100mg, the optimal quantity for analysis and verification. For EtG, added assessments, and/or beyond 10-panel tests, 150mg is advised. We advocate using a jeweler’s scale to weigh the sample. If scalp hair isn’t present, a comparable quantity of body hair might be used. "Head hair" indicates scalp hair exclusively. "Body hair" encompasses all other hair categories (facial, axillary, etc.).

Process Overview

The primary phases in laboratory examination of a drug test outcome include Accessioning, Screening, Extraction, and Confirmation.

Accessioning pertains to the initial integration of a sample into a lab's system. This stage involves ensuring the sample was correctly sealed and dispatched, assigning a random LAN (Laboratory Accessioning Number), and concluding any supplementary data input not handled by an electronic chain of custody system.

Screening features an expedited initial analysis for abusive substances. Although Screening economically excludes drug presence in most samples, any positive results necessitate confirmation to be judicially viable. All samples indicating a presumptive positive in Screening require subsequent confirmation.

For samples flagged as presumptively positive during Screening, additional hair is extracted from the primary sample and prepared for Extraction. In this phase, drugs are separated from hair at a significantly lower concentration than with alternative techniques (e.g., urine or oral fluid), marking hair drug analysis as a particularly challenging method.

Positive findings post-screening are validated via GC/MS, GC/MS/MS, or LC/MS/MS. All samples with presumptive positives undergo washing as required before confirmation. Every step from Accessioning to Confirmation undergoes scrutiny under both the CAP (College of American Pathologists) Hair guidelines and ISO / IEC 17025 standards accreditation.

Advantages of hair drug testing:

  • Extended detection period: Hair drug analyses can reveal drug usage for as long as 90 days, unlike urine tests that offer a shorter detection span.
  • Resistance to deception: Hair drug tests are notably challenging to falsify, enhancing result reliability.
  • Chronicles usage tendencies: Provides insights into drug usage patterns over time, rather than recent consumption alone.

Limitations:

  • Inability to detect recent usage: A timeframe of roughly 5-7 days is required before drugs are traceable in hair.
  • Expense: Hair drug testing typically incurs higher costs than other drug testing approaches.
  • Variation in results: Elements like hair color and personal differences in hair growth can impact drug metabolite levels in hair.

Note: Commonly called "hair follicle tests", these assessments actually examine the hair strand and not the follicle under the scalp.

Why Hair Follicle Testing Beats Urine Testing

Why Hair Follicle Testing Outranks Urine Tests in Ukiah, OR: Hair testing offers a robust comparison to traditional urine tests with enhanced detection accuracy. Hair samples retain drug metabolites longer, thus capturing extended periods of use compared to urine tests, which are limited to recent consumption. Moreover, cases of tampering are significantly reduced with hair testing, reinforcing its reliability and trustworthiness.

Extended Detection Window

In Ukiah, OR, hair follicle drug testing is recognized for its extended detection window—an advantage in workplace screenings. Capable of detecting drug use over a period of up to 90 days, this test surpasses other methods in logging substance history. For employers, the insights derived from a comprehensive view of an individual’s substance activities aid in informed hiring and retention decisions.

Tamper-Resistant Testing Method

Ukiah, OR, benefits significantly from the tamper-proof qualities of hair follicle drug testing. Compared to other methods, adulteration is less viable, ensuring credible results. Hair samples are difficult to manipulate, making this method ideal for delivering credible outcomes in contexts where the integrity of the process is paramount, such as in court and employment screenings.

Frequently Asked Questions

A hair follicle drug test analyzes a small sample of hair to detect a history of drug use over time. Because drug metabolites are incorporated into hair as it grows, this method can show patterns of use instead of just recent exposure. It is frequently used for legal and court requirements, long-term monitoring, and high-trust workforce screening.
Standard hair drug testing typically reflects drug use over approximately a 90-day period, based on the length of hair collected at the time of testing. Longer hair can sometimes reflect a longer time frame, and extremely short hair can reduce that window.
Hair drug testing commonly screens for marijuana/THC, cocaine, opiates/opioids, amphetamines/methamphetamines, and PCP. In many cases, additional expanded panels may be requested to include other substances.
Yes. If the donor's head hair is too short or unavailable, body hair may be collected as an alternative. The collector will document the source of the sample. This allows testing even for individuals with recently cut or shaved head hair.
Yes. Hair drug testing is commonly used in court, probation, custody, and compliance matters because the collection process follows a documented chain of custody and the analysis is performed by a certified laboratory. Results are provided in a form that can be reviewed by legal and administrative authorities.
Yes. Individuals, parents, attorneys, employers, and probation programs can all request hair drug testing. A doctor's order is not required. Results are confidential and released only to the authorized requesting party.
Hair testing provides a longer look-back period than urine testing, making it useful when you need to demonstrate ongoing abstinence or identify repeated/recent substance use patterns over time rather than just recent exposure. It is frequently selected for legal, compliance, and custody-related documentation.
A small section of hair is cut by a trained collector in a discreet, controlled manner. The sample is sealed, documented, and sent to the laboratory under established chain-of-custody procedures so that the results can be defended if they are ever challenged.
